This is a warm, ringing,
evocative instrument with bells for trebles and deep moving basses
coupled with exceptional clarity and separation of voice. I am
able to push this baby to its full volume without any negative feedback.
Easy to play, with amazing snapback of response, I have to say that Pat
is a quiet genius of a guitar maker.
It is also a rare treat to hold one of Pat's guitars as there are few of
them available, being highly prized by their owners. They rarely
come up for sale and for good reason.
The woods used on this guitar were from Pat's
special stock for his personal use. Back in 1985, the Brazilian
was already 85 years old and the Spruce a bit younger at 65 years old,
coming from what I understood to be a stockpile of wood owned by Pat's
Uncle, another master luthier who trained Pat.
The buyer, back in the 1980's convinced him to use
these particular woods on this very special guitar. Pat said no numerous times,
and then relented, the buyer being a good friend of his. He was
the only owner of the guitar until he brought it to me.
As a result, she is quite
special. I've played her now for over a year and she has woken
up, becoming even more mellow while maintaining clarity of voice that is
most endearing. Bach is very special on this instrument.
Issues with the guitar are few and quite minor.
There are nail marks on the soundboard, typical swirling in the back
finish. there are no cracks, breaks or splits of any kind.
There was one owner of this guitar, as I said earlier. I have
strung her up with
Savarez CRJ 500s mixed tension strings. |
