I test printed using a standard HP 4100, an HP 1115 (inkjet), an
HP 5L, an HP 6L an HP1320 Laser and an HP 2015d without any trouble.
Actually, I was pleasantly surprised at the results.
Try to use a heavy and off-color paper when printing. I use
a 67 lb. cream or white colored paper for my own purposes and those of
my customers. My books are printed using the same paper.

Chaconne from Violin Partita 2 - BWV 1004 - A one page example
from my latest work. The chaconne is probably the most famous of
the pieces coming out of this exquisite collection from Bach.
I'm certain that this will be a favored edition by most guitarists.
The new plan is to include an urtext version of all related pieces, so the
performer can determine choices and or analysis for themselves.
(dated 070430).
Fugue from Violin Sonata 2 - BWV 1003 - A one page example from my latest work. The fugue is beautiful, coming off the fingers with
incredible facility. The plan is to compile a list of sample pieces
from the various sonatas and partitas, the ones that are a pure joy to
play, or to publish books containing the entirety of the collections
(dated 070310).

Largo* from Keyboard Concerto in F Minor -
Largo_F_Minor.pdf - Requires a gentle touch, very slow,
stately and graceful. The best tempo is in and around 32-36
bpm at the most. There are a few tricky areas, including
measure 9 and the last beat of measure 10. Go slower until
it's in your hands. Also, the rhythmic structure can be a bit
intimidating to some. I would recommend listening to an
orchestral version of the Largo to help in this respect.
Many thanks to Sarn Dyer for his assistance in pointing out errors
in my original version. Look for the mp3 below! Very
pretty. This piece is found in my ...

Cello Suite #3 - Bourree 1 -
Cello3_Bourree1.pdf - This transcription is one that I'm
sure you will enjoy. It is a bit difficult overall but certainly
there's nothing here that practice and familiarity cannot overcome.
I've transcribed the entire Suite in the key of A Major because it
would seem to fall into the hands quite nicely. This
particular selection as well as Bourree II are simply magnificent
examples of the detail that went into the making of the Cello Suites
for Solo Classical Guitar. The entire 3rd Cello Suite will be
available soon. The Prelude and the other Bourree, which
complements this one, are the only selections available at this
time.

Book 1 -
Fugue_5_WTC1.pdf - Simply awesome - All the fugues are fantastic and
this is just one of the many standouts. Quick rhythmic play and
nimble rolling fingers are required. Go slow, learn the phrases
and listen to how alive your guitar will sound in no time. I was
smiling the entire time I worked this piece. Enjoy this little gem.

Invention #2 in C Minor *** -
The Two Part Keyboard Inventions for Solo CG -
Invention_2.pdf - A "one page sampler" of the original two pager
from my archive. This is another prime example of what I found
possible with the Inventions for solo classical guitar. Very
straight forward, great phrasing, and simply a great playing piece.
Originally in C Minor I dropped it to B Minor. I hope you like it.
All of them are great...this is one of my favorites.

Solo Violin Concerto - A Minor - Andante - Another first....a
one pager displaying the main idea behind this fabulous piece of music
arranged for Solo Classical Guitar. Slowly at 30-36 bpm.
Expressively and smoothly. There are some stretches necessary to
play this effectively and correctly, but they are not out of the norms
for moderate to advanced players. (4 pages, dated 031129)

Allegro from Weiss' Dresden MS Sonata XIV in A
Minor - This
Allegro is great fun, very brisk and quite energetic. This is a
one page
Sample, edited and marked, as an example of the body of work
regarding this entire Sonata. (dated 070311).
Lute Sonata
XIV in A Minor from the Dresden MS |
March from Weiss' London MS Sonata XX in D Major -
This March seems to be a very strict piece, yet has an air of
playfulness about it. This is the entire score of 2 pages, but,
it is unedited, unmarked, fingered, etc. I wanted to offer a
complete look at a score and how it is being engraved. The key
here was keeping in line with Weiss' own intentions regarding his
music. I believe....I repeat....I believe I've done this?
(originally dated 051213 ... updated as of 01/06).
Lute
Sonata XX in D Major from the London MS |
Menuet from Weiss' London MS Sonata XI in A Major - There
is a recording of this piece somewhere down below. It is a very
playful and delicate piece. (originally dated 051211...this is updated
as of 01/06).
Lute
Sonata XI in A Major from the London MS |
Allemande from Weiss' Dresden MS Sonata X in C Major -
Very intense and a lot of fun. The music is so natural.
The man continues to amaze. (originally dated 051211...this is
updated as of 01/06)
Lute
Sonata X in C Major from the Dresden MS |
Courante from Weiss' Dresden MS
Sonata XX in A Major - The courante from this Sonata is
another gorgeous piece of music. As I was editing it, I decided
that I would add another sample from this entire Sonata giving all of
you the first page from this piece. It is also 6 pages and just
comes off the guitar exquisitely. There are some IV, VI and IX
Barre positions but they are wholly appropriate and play quite easily
once you become accustomed to them. (originally dated 050611...this is
updated as of 01/06)
Lute
Sonata XX in A Major from the Dresden MS
Introduzzione from Weiss' Dresden MS
Sonata XX in A Major - This entire Sonata is also arranged in Drop D Tuning. This is a one page
sample of the piece, which happens to be 6 pages long! The entire
Sonata is 24 pages of music. All of the pieces contained within
the sonata are absolutely gorgeous and fun to play. (originally dated
050608...this is updated as of 01/06). |
Prelude from Weiss' Dresden MS
Sonata V in D Minor - This entire Sonata is arranged in Drop D Tuning. Some very pretty music
contained within this famous Sonata. This is a one page sample
of the piece. Again, this entire Sonata absolutely sings.
The prelude is just the beginning of how musically this sonata lies in
the hands. Not tough to play, it required some thought as to how
to get the instrument to sound nice and keep the flow going.
Once you get it, it is awesome! (originally dated
050608...updated as of 01/06)

Entreé from Weiss' London MS
Sonata XXIII in A Minor - This entire Sonata, better known as
L'Infidèle, is arranged in Drop D Tuning. Some very
pretty music contained within this famous Sonata. This is a one
page sample of the piece. I have had numerous requests for this
arrangement. I'm sitting very happy to have obliged. Sorry
it took so long...I been busy :-) (originally dated

Lute
Sonata XXIII in A Minor from the London MS - L'Infidèle |
Menuet from Weiss' Dresden MS Sonata IX in C Major -Weiss_Menuet
DM9.pdf - Standard Tuning. Another great piece from a
fantastic Lute Sonata. This PDF is the entire piece at one
page. This latest updated version reflects the accuracy and intent
of marking throughout all the Weiss Manuscripts we offer.
(originally dated 041116....updated as of 01/06)
Lute Sonata
IX in C Major from the Dresden MS |
Allemande from Weiss' Dresden MS Sonata XVII in A Major -Weiss_Allemande_DM17.pdf
- Standard Tuning.
A great piece from an overall fantastic Lute Sonata. The
Courante and the Chaconne of this sonata are also amazing pieces of
work. This PDF is one of two pages (originally dated
041209...updated as of 060110).
Lute
Sonata XVII in A Major from the Dresden MS |
Menuet from Weiss' London MS Sonata IV in G Major -Weiss_Menuet_LM4.pdf
-
Drop D Tuning. Another very pretty piece from the master lute
composer and player. This PDF is a one page sample
(original date in 041204, this is updated as of 060110).
Lute Sonata
IV in G Major from the London MS |
Bourrée from Weiss' London MS Sonata II in D Major -Weiss_Bourree_LM2.pdf
- Drop D Tuning, quick, and playful. A gorgeous example of
the master lute composer and player. This PDF is the
entire piece at one page (one page originally dated 0401203, this is
updated as of 060110).

Savage Classical Guitar
MP3s
I am always very happy to offer these
examples of my transcriptions as performed by myself. Please
respect my bandwidth ... download and save the files to your
pc...thank you. Enjoy!
MP3s will soon be limited to sample takes from the whole. This
will happen as new recordings are made, in preparation for a number of
CD releases, including a Celtic Collection, Bach, Weiss and Originals.
The plan for CD recordings has been put on hold for such time
that I recover from some serious injuries, if I recover. :-)
I hope I do.
The guitar used is usually detailed in the piece description.
The hardware is a set of AKG C1000S microphones ... Now have
moved over to an M-Audio Buddy pre-amp and Cool Edit 2000 recording
software on a dedicated high end recording PC, which contains, among
other things, lots of Ram, a high speed bus, tons of storage and a 2496
Audiophile Sound Card. Gets fairly respectable results for
simple, and fairly inexpensive home studio recording! :-)
Original Composition Recordings
The recording setup is identical to the above.
The only difference may be the acoustic guitar (if not
classical guitar oriented), which is described below (I own 2 of them).

Prelude #10 in E Major - A Father Remembers "Un Padre si Ricorda"
- 4:06 -
This piece of music came to me Monday morning August 11,
2008 after a horrific nightmare where I lost my children. I was
haunted, upset and basically tearing as I woke up. This was
ringing in my head. It had to be written down immediately.
This piece is dedicated to my father. I love him so very much.
A good man, a classic artist, fantastic musician, he is deeply loved by
my entire family.
This recording is done with my
Avalon A32J plugged straight into my pre-amp, which is then directly
plugged into my pc sound card. No noise reduction, reverb added,
that's it.

Prelude
#2 in A Minor - Well of Souls - 2:32 - Modeled
after the rhythmic figure of the Barrios Prelude, I considered this an
exercise in composition, but one that came off fairly well.
It starts out with the same harmonic figure, but changes as it
progresses.
Recorded on January 4, 2007 using my
Hippner Hauser #506. It is a sad piece of music, so please
leave sharp objects at a distance from yourself while you listen
:-)

The
Sorrow of Angels - 4:06 - Recorded on November 24,
2006, written the previous week. It is dedicated to my mother,
Yvette, whom I love more than she could possibly know. She is a
gorgeous and proud woman who loves her family and her grandchildren with
all of her heart and soul. She deserves all things beautiful.
I hope that I have succeeded at least to some small degree.
It is recorded on my latest

detail on my

Morning
Song - 3:08 - Recorded on November 9, 2006, written sometime
late last year, with certain revisions along the way to today. A
very earthy and gutty composition, it suits the guitar well.
It is recorded on my latest Darren Hippner Classical Guitar, #506 Hauser
model, described in detail on my
Guitar Page.
An incredible instrument that does what I ask. Any issues you
might hear in this recording are the result of the operator and not the
guitar! :-) The bit rate on this MP3 is set at 128Kb.

The
Lonely Walk - 2:38 - Recorded on October 25, 2005, written over
the prior week. I can't speak of the emotions behind this piece as
it is private, but somehow I believe it speaks for itself.
It is recorded on one of my Martin copies made by Takamine back in
1978. Hope you like it.

Samantha's Lullaby - 4:10 - A bit of a folk tune on classical
guitar. My daughter is hard to put to sleep. She's a demon
child but this soothes her for some reason. Recorded on my new
Hippner Hauser, which is featured on my guitar page. Written back in
2003, it was recorded originally on 050308. This recording
is newer, dated 050621 and is recorded on the Hauser #348.

Valerie's Air in A - 2:00 - This piece is part of a larger
Sonata that will act as a series of studies for the classical guitar.
It is dedicated to my beautiful wife, Valerie, a hard-working and
obstinate woman who simply doesn't know how to rid herself of me.
If I didn't dedicate this to her, I think she'd kill me in my sleep.
I'm told it is quite beautiful. I hope you think so.
- The Sonata will be published in the coming months.
- I may re-record it in the next day or so...I'm tired and not sure
of this print.

Dhiana's Playtime - 2:40 - I wrote this for my eldest daughter of 3
years, Dhiana. My perception of how she plays and how much she
loves at a given moment and then runs off again to skip and jump to her
heart's content. She's a precious child but I'm biased, obviously
:-) It is recorded using a 1979 Takamine EF-360S Martin
commissioned steel string acoustic. This is the final version
and will now be engraved at my earliest convenience. I'll keep
you posted....(Recorded on 031010).

demonic little baby girl, Samantha. Same setup as above, using two
Oktava mics, an M-audio Buddy, and Cool Edit 2000 all to a dedicated
high end recording PC. Not too bad...one take, early in the
morning on May 27, 2004, a couple of little mistakes, but you get the
idea. Hope you like it.

The Black Oak Harp - 2:50 - The music I heard staring at a Black
Oak Tree at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum. I was reading some Bach
literature and this tree made me look at it. Huge, graceful, and
flowing lines in this tree. Enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing
and playing it.

The Passing of Mark - 2:45 - For a good friend, Mark Alinovi and
son of another good friend, his father Vic, whom I absolutely adore and
admire for his strength. Mark passed away from a debilitating
illness shortly before this was written. A jazz drummer of
accomplishment, it was my thought he would appreciate the combined
bounce and yet inherent sadness within this piece.
Vic also lost his lovely daughter, Daria, to illness a few years
earlier. I think of him and what existence must be for him having
lost both of his children so tragically.
It is a raw recording and may be re-done shortly, but I wanted to put it
up as it was for the time being...

Double from Violin Partita I by Bach - this excerpt was
recorded on February 17, 2009. Sound is recorded straight thru

Sinfonia 3 for CG Duet - 0:43 - a partial extract from the
latter half of the piece. Performed by Steve Schram and myself.
This was recorded as part of my normal practice sessions. It was
cool if not perfect. We had a good laugh and thought you might
enjoy hearing some of it.
This piece is part of my

Steve is using a 1978 Ramirez 1A and I'm using the

Air on the G String - 1:51 - a partial extract from a not too
serious recording. I'm experimenting with the new guitar and some
new recording equipment and setups. I had everything on and this
came out. Not great as I was experimenting with some ornaments,
position, etc...on the fly, but it gives a good idea of what is
possible. This piece is found in my

Bach Miscellaneous Volume 1 collection.
Recorded using a

Prelude13_wtc1.mp3 - 2:03 - A beautiful piece from the Well

get a little better at the recording part of it. The sound is a
bit more robust, with better signal to noise. I would still turn
the treble down a bit. I'm using zero noise reduction and

Prelude from a Sonata in G Major by Leopold S. Weiss - 1:28 - a contemporary and friend of Bach, the man was one hell of a lute
player, and wrote some of the prettiest music while he was at it.
It's told he used to "cut heads" with Bach, while playing fugues!!!
I've always been a big fan, then one of the boys over at RMCG gave me an
idea. Going back into my "other than Bach" archives, I dug it up
and did this version right quick. Hope you like it...she's pretty
as all get out.
- This Suite was originally written in G
Major. My work is in A Major. The book that we released for
this Sonata is back in its original key (G Major), in Drop D tuning,
which is
Lute Sonata
IV from the London MS.
- My deepest thanks to Mr. Alain Reiher for
his help and information regarding this suite and S. Weiss in general.

Sagreras Book 3: Lesson 18 by Sagreras/Kent Murdick - 3:00 - an
intermediate piece arranged by Kent Murdick based on material by Julio
Salvador Sagreras. A very beautiful piece of music that I must
thank Kent for letting me perform. A one take performance so
forgive a little buzz here and there :-)
- You can find Kent on the web here:
http://members.aol.com/lutemann/guitar.html if you need to ask him
something.
- This is the first piece of music
that I record with my latest Spruce/Brazilian classical guitar from
Darren Hippner. This is #303 built in 2002. Gorgeous, loud,
gutty-sounding, powerful and responsive instrument. The guitar is
a gem! ...(Recorded 050126).
Sor Etude #17 in D Major - 1:56 - another outstanding study by
one of the great masters of guitar composition, Fernando Sor. One
of my general themes, regarding music that I listen to and/or perform,
is that it must be "gorgeous", pretty, thought-evoking and/or
emotionally bound. This beautiful piece fits nicely into this
theme. My only worry is that I do it appropriate justice.
Again, Alain Reiher was very helpful. Thank you Alain!...(Recorded
on 030830).

Reigen Tanz - 1:00 - An anonymous Renaissance piece written in
the 16th Century. Very simple. I edited the score on the fly
as I played, putting it in Drop D and other sundry stuff. Recorded
using the Hip506. (061121)

Manuel Ponce - Allemande - Suite in A Minor - 1:30 (050629) - A
great Suite, originally attributed to Silvius Weiss. This is only
the first repeat of the Allemande. My deepest thanks to my good
friend, William "Doc" Jennings, for access to the Segovia edition of
this wonderful music. I'm a little concerned that this would be so
easily attributed to Weiss as it does not resemble any of Weiss' music
or stylistic approach to capturing my musical attention, but back when
this was written, Weiss probably was not as popular or as well known as
he is becoming of late. I would like to re-record as I am not
happy with it.
- This is recorded on my Hippner Hauser
#348, dated above.

Bourree from the Weiss Lute Sonata IV in G Major - 0:49 (040312) -
An excerpt from the first section of the Bourree. This is taken
from my London Suite IV book, in Drop D. A great example of what
is possible regarding Weiss and the classical guitar. Enjoy.

Hugh O'Donnell - 1:42 - arrangement by El McMeen, the original
music comes from T. O'Carolan. I edited this arrangement for
classical guitar on November 20, 2006. I didn't repeat the 2nd
section, though I will on any official recording. The first
repeat is played fairly straight thru, the second time is embellished a
bit. It is recorded using my Hippner Hauser 506 on the same date.
(061120)
Arrangement Copyright El McMeen 2002. All Rights are reserved.

|
America The Beautiful - 1:52 - another arrangement by El McMeen,
this version of one of America's national songs is simply very pretty.
I subsequently edited this arrangement for classical guitar on November
18, 2006 and promptly re-recorded it early in the morning. It is
recorded using my Hippner Hauser 506. (061118)
Arrangement Copyright El McMeen 2003. All Rights are
reserved....and he's my buddy.

The Water is Wide (2:47) - a beautiful arrangement by my
friend El McMeen. This performance is recorded on a Hippner Santos
Blanca. The music has much feeling and the guitar lets it evidence
itself so sweetly. Thank you El!!!

The Mist Covered Mountains of Home - 2:40 - arrangement by a good
friend and Celtic acoustic guitarist El McMeen, this traditional Celtic
song is absolutely beautiful. I couldn't help myself when I
started to play it...I had to record it. Please visit El at
www.elmcmeen.com - where you can find more of his fabulous Celtic
arrangements and information regarding his discography and
books...(030816).

Wild Mountain Thyme - 2:45 - A gorgeous arrangement by Scott
Tennant, I altered it slightly, but only here and there. I found
it to be a very romantic piece and very enjoyable to play.
Recorded on a Hippner Hauser #348 (on 050419).
- I have subsequently re-written and
arranged this piece and may issue a classical guitar publication of
Celtic and original pieces (along with a CD) that will encompass this
piece and many others that you will find on this page...and some that
you don't find! :-)

|
In the Bleak Midwinter - 1:50 - another gorgeous arrangement by
El McMeen, this traditional Celtic song is very soulful. I used an
old Brazilian/Cedar classical in permanent Drop D tuning for this one.
(Recorded 050102).

George Brabazon 2nd Air - 2:40 - arrangement by El McMeen,
original music written by T. O'Carolan. Another really pretty
piece of music that sounds wonderful on the classical guitar.
|
|
Sor Exercise - Andante in C&G - 0:55 - a very pretty and simple
exercise based on the work of Fernando Sor, arranged by Kent Murdick.
You can go to Kent's site by clicking
here. There are plenty of free scores and music at his site so
don't be shy.

|
Inisheer Air - 1:20 - arrangement by El McMeen in CGDGAD, I used
a standard tuning of the classical guitar to make this one happen and
slightly re-arranged it to accommodate this tuning. I don't really
know much about this tune except that it's an Air and that it was
written by Thomas Walsh. All I know is that I like how it came off
on my guitar. Very pretty...(031228).

|
Pretty Maid - 2:40 - arrangement by another of my good buddies,
Jim Ivler; Drop D tuning of the classical guitar. El was kind
enough to forward the sheet music to me and as I understand it had a
large part in this arrangement. Played in the quiet of the early
morning, it was appropriate as it is a quiet and romantic piece of music
that I enjoyed recording very much......(031230).

Pemigewasett Sonata - I - Zealand Notch - 1:19 - Written by another
good friend, William D. Clinger, who is of "combat grade" wit, as
hysterically described by Doc Jennings. The music is from The
Pemigewasett Sonata in 3 movements.
This is the first movement, Zealand Notch. I'm trying to get to
the other 2, Slogging Downhill and Bagging Peaks, which is an incredibly
fun foray across the strings. I recorded this early on Christmas
morning...nice way to spend Xmas! Enjoy it and my thanks to Will
for sharing this with me and all of us. Recorded 041225.
Pemigewasett Sonata - III - Bagging Peaks - 3:14 - Third
Movement of the above. Tough to play! Fun too! hehe
.... Happy New Year! Both pieces, including the first movement
above, are recorded on an old Spanish Cello Backed Flamenco, solid
Brazilian and Cedar front, which is badly in need of new strings.
This guitar is gorgeous. Recorded 050101.

* Note that the Largo is sometimes referred to as
the "Adagio" from the same Concerto. These solo CG transcriptions of
Bach's Keyboard Concertos are based on and verified by research via numerous full score editions from myriad
publishers/editors including Breitkopf & Hartel,
Edition Peters, Schott (mini-full), and other full score
reproductions of the original Bach-Ges. editions, Leipzig, 1869,

performance annotations and differences among them regarding many of the
melodic passages, ties, use of appoggiatura, and ornamentation.
Differences that you may notice are due to the references noted above and
to choices based upon editing for solo CG performance. This applies
to all solo versions, regardless of any of my offered collections to
which you refer. The enclosed solo CG version and above references
were additionally verified against numerous highly regarded orchestral
recordings of such.

Please note that I appreciate your help with any errata
that may be noticed. I diligently attempted to present the solo
classical guitar versions of these pieces and collections as
authentically as possible. Bear in mind key changes or differences
in harmonic choices due to feasibility regarding the instrument and its
implied limitations. Thank you for your assistance and for specific
piece, measure, and beat references when doing so.

My salute to those publishers listed above that attempt
to relay the true penmanship of Bach, without the reservations or
additional embellishments of Romanticists who may be responsible for the
greater palatability of Bach to the public of their time. In my
work, I have hoped to further relay the spirit of, and the genius, of his
music as if he were to have written such for the guitar. My humblest
wish is that I have succeeded, continuing to do so, and that he would
approve in even the slightest way. Play often ... play well.
Most of my Cello Suite work was originally completed in
the late 1980's. Actually, that's true for the majority of all of my offerings. If you can believe this, I did all of this work for
my own performance needs and never gave a minute's thought to offering
them to the public. A good friend suggested that we do this after
seeing all the hundreds of manuscripts strewn about my living room and
dining room back in late 2001, after the World Trade Center tragedies
(yes, I worked there, in the second tower, when it happened) ... and ...
well... look what he started! That's another story for another time.
Have fun, be cool, and enjoy the music. Please respect my property,
time, and efforts in these or any of my work. Thank you and peace
to you and yours. Richard. |
