My trip to Rome and the 2018 Roma Guitar Expo

By Blog, Latest From Rich, Uncategorized 2 Comments

Hello Everyone!  Thank you kindly for taking the time to read my blog, which in essence, I feel is a personal and professional journal and possibly diary, if you will.     You are all most kind to take such interest.

OK, Rome and the Roma Guitar Expo.  Honestly, given the time constraints of being away and traveling for 5 days, I was not looking forward to it.  It was almost fully paid for by the Italian Trade Commission, yet, I’m wondering, “how do I manage the time”?  You may find that odd?  How could you not want to go to Italy?  Well, you have to see it from my point of view.  I am this business, and as professionally as I run it, it’s all still very personal to me.  In the end, people want to speak with me and only me.  I get it.  I would want the same.

All I can say, in the end, I’m very happy I went.  Yes, I was shut down for 5 days, but it was worth every minute.  Allow me to explain.

The first thing you realize when you arrive in Rome is that the air and the light is very different. now, I’ve been to Rome, Italy and much of Europe many times. What floors is me is that as I get older, my appreciation for the Finer Things in life, the art, the culture, the architecture, and in general the Artistry of the European people is simply staggering.

Originally, the coordinators of the Roma Guitar Expo (wonderful people by the way), put me in a beautiful hotel in a town called Collotino, just outside of Rome proper. As nice as it was, I felt removed from the city of Rome, moving my accommodations on my own the following day to a beautiful and quaint hotel in the center of the city, with the help of my good friend, Nicoló Alessi of the Tuning Machines fame. Good choice. I immediately felt more connected to my environment, from many different angles, personally, culturally, and professionally.

Fontana-di-Trevi

Fontana di Trevi

After settling into my room and putting my things away, I took a 2 hour stroll around the city, checking out the venue location, having a chance to see some of the more immediate attractions including the Fontana de Trevi – The Colosseum – The Spanish Plaza and knock me down the Plaza Venezia. These are quite literally “Holy Shit” moments for anyone of normal sanity (which I know is questionable for me personally LOL).

The Trevi Fountain was on my way to the Expo from hotel, where I was blessed to see it every day for 4 days.

You can not believe the intricacy, the art, the workmanship, the man hours and the vision it must have taken to conceive of and build such wondrous things.  These shots you see are done on the fly with my phone.  Really, not too bad, overall.  So beautiful!

My main goal, of course, was to see and meet the luthiers of Italy that were in attendance to this wonderful Expo, so allow me to move on to this subject and leave you with, if there is a place to visit in your lifetime, Rome has to be one of these important destinations.  The art, the culture and the food (omg!) are amazing.

Plaza Venezia

My arrival to the Expo was greeted with a brief explanation of what was happening, and right into a conference with the many luthiers, other dealers that were invited from the US, England, and Germany, and the coordinators of the event.  I had to speak to everyone, where quite frankly, I was unprepared.  But, I managed through it, keeping it short and sweet, staying very positive (I say this because it occurred to me that I have spent much time with many people over the years who have criticized other dealers, and I shut my gotdam mouth about it), and then, I thought it important to relay to them all that I was a luthier’s dealer, that I have done their work, that I have repaired and restored over a hundred instruments myself (my hobby when I worked on Wall Street).  I then relayed to them my fondest thoughts, that of working with raw wood and applying shellac to that wood after preparation.  This really got their interest, which I was very happy about, and was the point.  No dealer that I’m aware of actually works on guitars, and quite frankly, I wanted them to realize, to know, that this is how I got started.  It had the desired effect.

Meeting each of the luthiers over the next 3 days was so very special for me.  Playing their instruments for myself, listening to the numerous great players who were in attendance play those same guitars, examining the guitars, handling them carefully (unlike most…yikes, this bothers me to no end to see people being disrespectful with someone else’s guitar), and listening carefully to the voice, the expression, the depth, the lyrical nature of the instruments from each builder, one after the other.  I cannot relay to you how apparently important the voice is to these very special luthiers.

Camillo Perrella - Eugenio Ligato - Giacomo Guadagna - Mario Pistella

Camillo Perrella – Eugenio Ligato – Rich Sayage – Giacomo Guadagna – Mario Pistella from left to right

Never mind the artistry of their work, the meticulous attention to detail.  It has convinced me that Italian luteria is going to be a specialty of mine for the foreseeable future.

I would like to mention the names of some of the people I met and all of the luthiers that I met with during this incredible yet short trip (in no particular order): Dealers: Claudio Zangirolami – David Collett – Manuel Luchena and Miles Roberts.  I particularly enjoyed meeting and speaking with these gentlemen as it is rare that I can find them all in one place.

I ended up having dinner the first night with numerous performers including the great Aniello Desiderio and Luigi Attademo – Massimo delle Cese (amazing players all of them) along with Luthier Paolo Coriani – the amazing Lorenzo Frignani – Nicoló Alessi – and I believe one of the sponsors of the Expo, Massimo di Coste – It was an amazing meal made more so by the incredible people I was surrounded by in the most beautiful restaurant.

Nicolo Alessi on the left and Lorenzo Frignani on the right. Claudio is left behind Nicolo and then Luigi Attademo behind him.  You can see Aniello leaning in behind Luigi

Paolo Coriani on the left front and Massimo delle Cese back right.  Marco Maguolo is here as well as Fabio Zontini back left

Luthiers – Toni De Stefano – Paolo Coriani – Enrico Bottelli – Mario Pistella – Matteo Vaghi (along with the beautiful Federica Canta – a wonderfully expressive player) – Danielle Marrabello – Andrea Tacchi – Camillo Perrella – Luigi Locatto – Lucio Antonio Carbone – Roberto de Miranda – Eugenio Ligato – Giacomo Guadagna – Stefano Brescini – Davide Serracini – Lorenzo Lippi – Fabio Zontini – Silvia Zanchi – Rinaldo Vacca – Alessandro Marseglia – Roberto Pozzi – Mirko Migliorini – Michele Della Giustina – Leonardo De Gregorio – Ennio Giovanetti (I love this guy) – Gabriele Lodi – Rinaldo Vacca – Stefano Brescini – Lorenzo Frignani (there are so many great luthiers and he is a standout) and Marco Maguolo along with my good friend, Nicoló Alessi of Alessi Tuning Machines.

The first night was a concert featuring 9 performers playing the Arcimbolda Guitar that was built by 15 luthiers of Italy.  Each played 2 shortish pieces and it was spectacular.

The 2nd night was a concert with Aniello Desiderio – again, a beautiful and engaging performance.  He played the entire concert with a guitar by the great Alessandro Marseglia – this after another long but fruitful day of meeting with various luthiers and playing their guitars.

The 3rd day and night started with me walking some more around Rome, seeing more sights, then getting back to the show at 10AM.  I met with a ton more luthiers, including Gabriele Lodi and Andrea Tacchi, who had given a lecture/dissertation on the great Robert Bouchet the 2nd afternoon.  Very enlightening, clearly showing his knowledge of the great luthiers of Europe, as evidenced by his own great work, very mindful of the Bouchet and Friederich works.  Andrea surprised me at a local Bar down the road for a quick Espresso, while I was sipping on my own coffee and a quick Espresso of my own.  He came up right next to me, thanked me for my kind and very brief words to him at the show (he’s so well-known, I felt it rude to intrude upon him any further other than to thank him for seeing me and what an honor it was just to shake his hand and play his beautiful guitars).  He then wrote the name and phone number of a great collector of fine instruments down for me on a piece of paper (which I’ll never use, again, he said it was okay but I would never be so presumptuous), of which that piece of paper will be framed and put on my office wall.  What a nice man and don’t kid yourself, a phenomenal creator of fine classical guitars.  A very cool moment for me personally, one I’ll not forget.

OK, so let’s talk about the Italian luthier, as a whole and in general.  Musical.  Expressive.  Tonal Palette.  Lyrical.  Power and Projection.  Almost as a collective, these guitars were incredible.  The Hauser-ish guitars with a beautiful internal and expressive voice.  The innovations from some of these men were outright special.  Some of the power of these guitars was really astounding, and yet, keeping with the lyrical nature, where they played so well even softly.  Gotdam, I’ve re-thought my entire philosophy on the classical guitar being around so many great luthiers and guitars.  I didn’t think it was actually possible to marry power and voice in a CG, but here these guys are kicking it out of the park.

I’ve told them all what I tell every luthier that chooses to work with me and my gallery.  On your terms, no contracts, no exclusives, work with me because you want to work with me.  I will never specify your work, as I understand the artist, the builder, where I want you building that which inspires you.  I will never rush you.  I will never tell you how to run your own business. I will never limit you or put minimums on you.  Send me what you love and when you wish to do so.  It is always on their terms.  You have to understand that these men and women, all luthiers, are builders yet artists.  You cannot tell someone anything or specify a damned thing about what they are doing.  Then it becomes work, and who in the hell wants to actually work for a living?  Their inspiration is what drives them, their innovation keeps them awake, their creations are what drive them, and me or anyone else has the nerve to put a limitation of any kind on them?  Seriously, that would just be downright stupid and ignorant, but there you go, it happens all the time.

I am a luthier’s dealer.  I know their work, I’ve done it.  I know the training they have gone through, the apprenticeship of a decade or more.  The European way of artisanship.  This is to be respected, and rightfully so.  I do their work.  I polish, setup and repair/restore these guitars.  From molding splices to taking them apart and putting them together.  No other dealer that I know of does this or has the knowledge.  I know the guitars through and through, from internal to external inspection, neck angles, bracings, innovations, etc.  I am a luthier’s dealer, plain and simple.

Last point, if I did this for money, I’d have stayed on Wall St.  I worked a lot less and got paid WAY more.  This is about art, music, appreciation of the finer things in life, the more delicate issues, the honest and fair representation of good people who are of the same mind.  My goal wasn’t to make the classical guitar the most popular, but to do it better than anyone else in this business.  The art of representing these men and women as artists, and not to exploit them and or take advantage of the market or my clientele.  I have always said it, and I maintain, that if I take care of the luthier and the client, I’ll be just fine in the end.  The good news is that I sleep just fine taking good care of both sides of the guitar.  OK, enough. I’m very passionate about this, so I’ll end the rant right here.  This is why I love these luthiers.  They’ve married, through their hard work and dedication as luthiers and artists equally, the never ending problem of voice/expression and projection/power.  Plain and simple.  Rather incredible as well.  There you have it, my professional thoughts on the whole of it and these most talented people.

So, the first luthier to commit to my gallery is Lucio Antonio Carbone – my notes on his guitars were simple: Bright, clear, powerful and musical.  He has a Hauser replica that he will send to me in a few weeks that requires no CITES paperwork.  If I remember correctly, he works with Ziricote and Pau Ferro for back/sides and they (all of these luthiers) almost always use Italian Alps Spruce from the Fiemme Valley in the Trentino province located in the Dolomites mountain region.

As of March 26th, 2018, numerous luthiers have committed a guitar to the gallery, beginning a long friendship and collaborative effort to bring the finest Italian luthiers here to the gallery.  I will write a list of those luthiers below as I have time to update.

To all the Luthiers that I have spoken with and am in communication with, I am writing up a Spreadsheet of contact, emails sent, addresses, phone #’s, etc so that I can keep everything organized.  My hope is to continue communications this month, to give and get updates from each of you so that we are all aware of where we stand at the moment.  Thank you kindly and as always, big hugs from NY.  Rich

Mario Pistella & Giacomo Guadagna

Mario Pistella (left) & Giacomo Guadagna – Jean Luc Picard on the right (I’m told I look like him with short hair LOL)

Liutaio Giacomo Guadagna – has indicated that he will have his Venere Gran Concerto classical guitar ready for our gallery in 5 months

Stefano Brescini is resolving his CITES paperwork and will be sending a guitar to the gallery in the coming year.

Roberto de Miranda is sending a guitar to the gallery.

Eugenio Ligato has also committed a guitar to the gallery.  He will be visiting me in early June 2018

Mario Pistella, another great luthier, very engaging, builds a superb guitar with voice, power and character.  He will be coming to the gallery in the next few months.

I wanted to write down for the record, my short thoughts on each luthier I met:

Lorenzo Lippi is an extraordinary builder as well as teacher – his student instruments exceed much of anything else from around the world.  His guitars are a superior catch in a very large arena.  He is a very serious man and what can I say, I like that!  He will be sending a guitar possibly by the end of May 2018?

Roberto de Miranda builds a very elegant guitar in voice and artistry.  Very nice.  He’s a gentle soul and a wonderful man.

Alessandro Marseglia

Alessandro Marseglia

Enrico Bottelli – seriously beautiful and what a man.  He commands presence much like Lorenzo Lippi.  His guitars do the same, beyond lyrical.

Camillo Perrella – a character, I immediately liked him, and his guitars are innovative, very resonant, intimate to loud.  I wrote, “no problem having him here”.  Pretty amazing what he is able to accomplish.  I’ll speak more about this on his own page when he comes to the gallery.

Lorenzo Frignani – another great man, great luthier.  Very soft-spoken, he carries a big guitar LOL – My notes were simple, “Seriously? Wow!” His guitar is now available in the gallery!  Gorgeous.

Luigi Locatto – another wonderful man, you can see his art and dedication in his eyes.  8 years older than me, the man is a true artist, with a specialty of restoring historical instruments that he can recreate seemingly effortlessly.  His expression and coloration coupled with more than adequate power makes him a standout.

Alessandro Marseglia – a superb luthier and great man, he builds a powerful yet sensitive guitar that is wholly expressive.  I wrote that he is a must have in the gallery.

Toni de Stefano –  has committed to the gallery with his TDS Model with EIRW

Paolo Coriani – has also committed to the gallery in the next few months with one of his concert models

Roberto Pozzi – is getting ready to send a guitar middle of 2019

I’ll keep writing about all of the people I met, but want to do it when I’m fresh and good to go. I’m a bit tired right now and still have other work to attend.  I’ll be back tomorrow.  Rich

I wanted to start this journal entry, so at least I have something to begin with, where I will add to this over the coming days, with photos of the luthiers, the Expo, more sights, etc.  My best and thank you kindly again, for taking the time to read my thoughts.  Richard  631-335-5447

Truth and Honesty in Guitars and heck yeah…the World Wide Web

By Blog, Latest From Rich, Player's Corner, Uncategorized No Comments

Trust and Honesty.  An interesting concept.  It shouldn’t be, but the sad fact remains, it is an oddity in this day and age.  From back in the day, vendors have been spouting their special brand of I invented a new wheel or the better mousetrap, but the sad fact remains that the mouse likes cheese (or is it peanut butter) and his neck still snaps with alarming efficiency from the springy thing on the other side of the piney looking same old same piece of wood and don’t forget, it’s still mighty inexpensive for that boring old mousetrap.  I can prove it  Just go to your old hardware store and look for one.

Why do I bring this up?  An interesting? question or just the need to vent the pressures of a self-righteous bladder?   You decide, though I’m firmly rooted on the latter.  It starts with a rant on marketing and marketing professionals, but finishes nicely, like the Nascar driver who just won Daytona 500 spinning in the winner’s circle, with the showing of some of the seamier sides of the business of classical guitar.  Enjoy.

Let’s see.  Oh yes, I remember (as I pull myself back into my lane without the need of a lane checker in the latest automobiles), I do a lot of SEO work here, especially late at night or early in the AM, while waiting for the java to lick at my synapses and wake my sorry ass awake.  In doing so, I check on the people out there selling their wares, what’s selling, why, how they’re doing it, and so on.  It turns out, I’m really good at what I do, if I don’t say so to my “don’t mind if I do slap myself on the back” self.  btw, SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization.  A process by which you are found on the world wide web by the use of select keywords.  There remain many metrics that go into this optimization, and many that were in practice back in the day.  As it were, from 2002 to about 2012, I had an old fashioned, MS FrontPage web site, that worked really well for me, and in that 10 year span, I built the SEO work up to a very high level.  Lots of traffic, high rankings for specific and useful keywords, and so on.

Then, I had to go and change everything, the website, the IP address, the whole shebangawanga.   Ranking plummeted, my blood pressure skyrocketed, and me and my site went to the crapper without the satisfaction of any excremental release.  Disgusting, I know.  So, and here comes one of the many points on the top of my pointy head, I had to reconcile needing professional help.  Not the psychiatric kind, though not as useless as you might imagine, but the SEO professional kind.  Gods, they promise the moon, but what they really gave me was a supernova of trouble.  Let me explain further.

See, my business, the business of acquiring and filtering through many classical guitars of all prices and timbre, is a highly specialized one, fraught with the danger that, if you do not know what you are talking about, it will eventually rear its ugly veneer job and bite you most unevenly in the ass.  Well, part of these SEO prickjobs job is to write copy for backlinks that will never be seen?  So how did I see it, you ask through the almost probable covering of your mouth through the inevitable yawn?  I searched and found it rather easily.  This pretty little lady, somewhere in the back deserts of Arizona, sitting in her little cubicle working for the “premier” internest (not a misspelling) and marketing firm, wrote copy that went along the lines of, “If you’re looking for the best flamenco guitar store in the world, let your search end with Savage Classical Guitar store, where you can find a capo, classical guitar strings, and repair your classical guitar with one of our knowledgeable people who really understand your guitar”, etc and so on and please god kill me right now on this gotdam spot.

Truth be told, the copy was way worse than the above.  See, if I tried, I couldn’t be as bad as that poor sappy little lady who gets paid to write drivel for a living.  Not to say I’m great, but hey, give me a little casino credit here, it’s all frickin’ relative.   Worse yet, they wormed their way into my backend (wow, that was Freudian…do people even say that anymore), OK, the backend of my web server, my html coding, what have you, and started writing meta tags and scripts that did even worse things to my rankings on the web.   I’ll spare you the techno dribble, but suffice to say, they sent me from page 1 and 2, to page 37, which is the same thing as sailing West before Columbus’ day, where without a doubt, you fell off the gotdam planet.

Nice.

So, since early December 2013, where I realized the problem I was having, I’ve been working on it myself, as much as I can spare the time.  Slow improvement, but let’s face it, and it’s the old adage, if you want something done right, do it yourself.  The thing is, not everyone can do this.  I get that.  My advice is to not trust the marketers.  They are expensive, self-serving, and they hurt your business in the end.  If I had to do it all over again, I would have saddled myself with a poor ranking, and brought it upwards with time and patience.  Not the most glamorous thing, but I wouldn’t have 4,000 wayward backlinks to my site that actually hurt my ranking, instead of helping.  I didn’t do this, the marketers did, in a story starring the get rich quick kid, instead of the slow and patient investor.  Truth and Honesty.  They didn’t tell me the truth, and honestly, they screwed me like a screwdriver without the vodka. Talking of drinks with no punch and segues….

Alas, I buy and sell guitars.  Really nice ones.  I know.  I picked them out of a line-up.  So in my search for why my rankings were so low, and my SEO work so ineffective I see lots of ads for guitars.  One like this….”Amazing quality hand-made guitars Very low prices starting at $750.00.”

Wowie, I gots to check this out.  Turns out they are laminated (which is OK), but not fully disclosed.  They are made in China, but not disclosed.   I’ve seen and played these guitars.  My personal opinion aside about how bad they are, they’ve got a lot of nerve.  But it gets better, as read below….

An infuriating practice.  Build a crap guitar built in China.  Put a $1200 price tag on it, don’t fully disclose it has laminated back and sides, but by all means, say it’s as good as a guitar that costs $7K or $8K.  !!!!!!!!!  Say what?

Really?  You’re honestly going to compare your $1200 laminate to a Kenny Hill Signature, a Bob Desmond, a Frederich Holtier, a Robert Vincent, a Richard Bruné, a Richard Prenkert, etc. ad nauseum ad infinitum?  Seriously?  I’m going to write about this in a separate article some day.  Oh yeah, and I’m naming names.   If you’re curious, I’m not interested in making friends.  I’m far more concerned and interested in people being ethical, honest and doing business fair and square.

I see this all the time.  I get Chinese manufacturers calling and writing to me all the time.  Sure, I’m the big fish they want to score.  In a million years, no way.  When I do come out with my own brand of guitar, it will be built by people that actually know what they are doing.

The one guy I do business with who builds in China, actually goes there, to his partner facility, one week a month, every month, to oversee all processes, the woods used, construction, practices, quality assurance, and so on.  He then has them delivered to his home facility in California, where they are further inspected and then distributed directly by him to his dealers.  I am one of them.  They are the only Chinese made product I will have here in my shop.  Why?  Because they are personally managed by Kenny.  He vets everything and anything to do with the process of building those guitars that he puts his name on.  He builds his Performance Series and Signature Series in Ben Lomond, California, if you’re curious.  Again, the New World Series, built by Kenny Hill, including his Estudio Series and Player Series, are built in China.  Wow, how clear is that?

He prices his laminate model Estudios w/HSC at $895 and his solid body Players at $1695 w/HSC.  You’ll notice that in my listings for Kenny’s Estudio, it actually says, in clear black and white, that the Back and Sides are laminated.  I believe I’m the only dealer to say this clearly in his listings for any and all guitars with laminated back and sides.

Why?  Simple.  No BS, no nonsense.  Solid woods cost a lot of money.  I’m talking quality solid woods.  Have you seen a Player from Kenny Hill.   They are gorgeous.  The Spruces shimmer, the East Indian is straight with a ruddy color, browns and reds, the Cedars have medullar rays, etc.

I could use those woods on a guitar costing twice as much and wouldn’t blink.  You’re not finding that in a $1200 guitar brand new and I apologize ahead of time, because I don’t need to do so.  It’s not going to sound like an $8K classical guitar.  It’s not going to play like it, resonate like it, be musical or lyrical like it.  It’s not going to have world class woods on it, or even decent tuning machines.

Gods, this is surprising?  It shouldn’t be.  Why would a world class luthier bother putting in, I don’t know, 200 or 300 hours into a world class instrument with woods that cost more than your $1200 guitar and tuners combined, when godsmack me in my bloated and disturbed little head, they could just build a Chinese class guitar for $500, ship it, and put a nice HSC on it, and sell it to you thru themselves or a dealer for $1200?  Hot diggety doggy style, why didn’t I think of that?

Get real.  If you want a student level guitar, get one.  Don’t expect it to be $8K worth of sound and volume.  It won’t be.  My title should also include the word “reality”.

The truth is that these men and women, true luthiers, masters of the craft, are horrified by any one moron who would be so simple, so blithe, so ridiculously glib to say that their $1200 guitar built in China is better than or “as good” as that of a master’s luthier made instrument of 200+ hours.  To the point where they can and should laugh their asses off at such silliness of banter.

So, let’s be honest here.  Let’s be truthful.  Let’s be forthright, with zero games, zero nonsense.  People say stupid things all the time, heck, they’ll sell ice to an eskimo, tell them they should pay for it because the water came straight from the mountain springs deep in the Alps (reads came from a water filter made by Brita in my kitchen sink),  but it don’t make it true, and it certainly doesn’t make it right.  You want the straight talk, call me.  You want the nonsense, call our friend in Paraguay who will be happy to sell you a $5K piece of crap with no return policy or people who misrepresent $1K classical guitars as something that sounds “exactly” like a luthier built $8K guitar?  (this just blows my mind).

You can also deal with the guys who think that just because they have a collection of guitars, that this makes them an expert dealer, when clearly they are incapable of handling your classical guitar, setting it up, re-polishing it, shellac work, lacquer work, buffing, repair work, etc.  They truly have zero idea of how to pack and ship a guitar.  These same people have no interest in truly representing a guitar accurately or honestly, with no expertise behind their commentary, regardless of any flowery talk they throw on a site or at you.  They don’t understand the guitars to begin with, but “can speak with expertise”?  Expertise from where?  Fantasy Land?  You can’t even get shipping a guitar correctly.

Basically, I am increasingly upset with what I’m hearing from luthiers and private clientele, how they are treated by the corporate mentality, to the private dealer who has no business being in “this” business.  Crooks, incompetents, thieves (variation of crooks  LOL), inherently deceitful.  From Georgia, to the MidWest to California.   They don’t know how to setup a guitar, polish one, inspect one (I mean inspect it internally and externally), not having the ability to truly assess the condition or viability of an instrument.  But, they will happily up the price of a guitar given exclusives, meaning you can only go to them for the guitar, and happily wop you for an additional 30-50% more for the guitar, because, hey, they have an exclusive?  WTF is that?  More and more, in this business, it is becoming clear, from incompetence, to overpricing, to general bullshit, and I have to say it out loud, I’m freaking tired of it.  But…

Seriously, they make my job that much easier.  I’m good with that, people, keep it up.  As a result, my business increases, the luthiers who wish to work with me keep arriving (defectors from other dealers), and my consignment business has never been better.  So, thank you!  Thank you very much, you make my life better.  But then, there’s the following aspect of the business:

Even better, a lot of people are selling guitars they don’t build themselves, guys in Spain, famous luthiers that you wouldn’t believe, with their dealers in the West or Mid-West, and then whoa, there’s some real special guys, serious assholes right here in good ole America. Christe, some don’t even know what makes a great guitar, or heck, even a decent guitar.  But they’ll tell you they do and sell it to you for $1200, happily taking your money to the bank.  Assholes taking advantage of people who don’t know better, the American way, gone global.

You want the straight scoop.  You want true expertise with a willingness to say, “hey, I don’t know the answer, but I’ll find out for you”.  You want to talk with someone who totally gets you and what you’re looking for, able to listen and understand you perfectly. You want someone who knows the luthier language and can speak to them for hours about their methodology, tricks of the trade and what actually makes a guitar a guitar?   Cool, then call me…talk to me.  I have zero problem outting people that do bad things, in this business or any other.  I’ll talk straight, about anything, because I don’t know anything else.

There, guitar world, from America to Paraguay, to England to New Zealand, I had the balls to say it out loud.   A $1200 guitar from California made in China or a $3000 guitar made in Paraguay (I don’t care what wood they used or how pretty it might be) is never going to sound as good, be built as well, with meticulous attention to detail, as a fine classical guitar made by a world class luthier – a true master who truly knows their shit and costs a helluva lot more than that.  Truth and Honesty with a splash of reality.

Signed – RF Sayage – and imagine what the F stands for – written at the end of the 1st month of 2014 on a Friday morning when I definitely had better things to do.  OK, not better, but more important?

The Practice of Practicing

By Blog, Latest From Rich, Player's Corner No Comments

A great article I found with the help of one of my old teachers.  It is about concert pianists, but can be applied to all musical performance situations and really, most anything else, athletics included.

Credits to Stephen Hough

Stephen Hough is a concert pianist by night, but his daytime interests include theology, art, hats, puddings… and writing about them. His website is www.stephenhough.com and he is @houghhough on Twitter.

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/culture/stephenhough/100070997/the-practice-of-practising/

Concert pianists spend much more of their lifetimes practising than they do playing concerts. It’s not just that pieces need to be kept in the memory (muscle and mind), but the very act of playing the piano is physical and athletic. It involves reflex and endurance. It may be true that you never forget how to ride a bicycle, but if you and it are rusty there’s not much hope of winning or even completing the Tour de France.

So we need to practise. But the key is how we make our time offstage best serve our briefer time onstage. A pianist who plays many concerts has little time to spare so it’s important that those spare hours, even minutes, are used well.

My teacher, Gordon Green, used to say, “in practise a perfectionist, in performance a realist”. In other words, prepare assiduously, tirelessly at home, but when onstage accept the situation at hand without wishing the piano were more in tune, the audience were more appreciative (or larger), you hadn’t made a mess of that octave passage and so on.

But being a “realist” sounds rather prosaic when faced with bringing to poetic, passionate life the masterworks of master composers. I might put it differently from Gordon: in practice an engineer, in performance a pilot. Nuts and bolts in a plane are incomparably important, but when you sit at the cockpit of a Steinway concert grand your eyes need to look ahead not underneath.

The purpose of practising is so that we (offstage as engineers) make sure that we (onstage as pilots) are completely free to fly to the destination of our choice. That destination is one involving imagination and creativity and spirituality and danger and ecstasy of course, not merely the A to B of playing the notes, but without the nuts and bolts in place we will never be airborne. The greatest interpretative vision of the final pages of the final sonata of Beethoven will nosedive to oblivion if we can’t play an even trill.

*****

So, moving inside the hangar, spanner at the ready, how do we practise? There are as many answers to that question as pieces in our repertoire, but maybe some signposts can help:

Study
Relish the task, whether beginning to learn a piece or whether revising one long familiar. Examine the score like a rabbi poring over a rare parchment. Decode the message behind the notation. Map out the journey. Look for the obstacles. Know the (good) tradition of historical evidence; distrust the (bad) tradition of ‘its always done like this’. You may be Brahms’s secretary in the practice room, but on stage you are his mouthpiece. And a composer’s message is always more than words: it’s a drama in which you and Brahms are as one character.

Finger
When starting to learn a piece I always write in fingerings. It aids memory, it emphasises the act of study, it discourages a sloppy “sight-read till ready” attitude, it forestalls nerves in a performance, it personalises the score. In the early years of a career we can be asked to step in at the last moment for a colleague who has cancelled. I remember an occasion when I was in my early 20s getting a call to play Bartok’s 3rd concerto with the Chicago Symphony and Esa-Pekka Salonen. There was about a day’s notice and I hadn’t played the piece for a couple of years. I could accept the date because the nasty, twisting passage towards the end of the third movement was fingered and thus still in my motor memory. It saved me a couple of hours work when I only had 24 hours to pack my bags and fly across the Atlantic.

Dissect
We need to know what might go wrong in a performance and why. There is no such thing as a difficult piece. There are merely moments in pieces which are problematic. The notorious coda of the 2nd movement of Schumann’s Fantasie op. 17 is a good example:

A is easy for the left-hand, moderately tricky for the right; B is hard for both hands; C is a little easier for both because the 5th fingers land on black notes; D is easy for both. To face this passage like a rabbit looking into the headlights of an approaching car is totally counter-productive. We do not face a steamroller. There are four wheels (or two which are parallel) and if the rabbit is not in the line of these it can scamper off into the forest unscathed.

Slow
Slow practice can be a complete waste of time if the mind is not working quickly. Simply to trawl through passages like a contented tortoise is a waste of the felt on your piano’s hammers. Good slow practice is more like a hare pausing to survey the scene – sharp in analysis, watching through the blades of grass, calculating the next sprint. My favourite kind of slow practice is the half and half variety. For example in a semiquaver passage I will play four notes at performance tempo then four notes exactly half the speed – then reverse the groups. It can sometimes be useful to do this with eight-note groups. It stops any tortoisian ambling and it focuses the mind quickly from one reflex to another. It is a hare with alert eyes.

Audience
There are two dangers to avoid in practising, firstly not to play as if you’re onstage, filling the hours crashing through pieces without improvement. This is a common occurrence in conservatories – Rachmaninov concertos pounded with adolescent passion and coarse, crude effects. But the second, more subtle danger is not to get stuck in a practising mode. This is related to mindless slow practice. All the focus when in the practice studio should be how we will play when in the concert hall. If something comes apart, don’t stop immediately. Guide the skidding wheels around the crashing corner for another meter or two, despite the sparks and screeches. A common student scenario: music flying along; train wreck; a second of silence; start at point of accident; continue. The point where things broke down is the fragile spot, the dodgy seam. It needs sufficient overlap of material to be strong. Go back before the mistake and practise beyond the mistake – then the mistake itself will be more safely repaired. Otherwise the very stopping and starting becomes a reflex – an ingrained repetition of breakdown.

Mind
As important as it is to have strong fingers – muscles, tendons, joints loose and lithe – we need a strong mind too. Strong in concentration, on and off stage; ever striving for improvement, but relaxed when none seems to take place; aiming the dart tirelessly at every bullseye, but gentle and kind when it clatters to the floor. Muscles are effective when they are able to tense and relax at will, not just when they bulge in a ripple of aggression. This is true for the physical side of playing as well as for the mental challenges. The mind’s clear vision is not a stare: it needs to be able to focus near and far with flexibility and wisdom.

*****

There is a well-worn saying: practice makes perfect. I don’t believe this, at least in reference to playing the piano: abstract “perfection” is rarely what we seek; but good practising makes it more likely that we will give a good performance. Its attention, its concentration, its tightening of the screws enable the concert experience to take wing in freedom.

Classical Guitar XMAS – A Sale and Contests

Classical Guitar by Woodley White

Woodley White Classical Guitar – November 2009

Hi All,

First thing is to say Happy Holidays to all my customers, luthiers and everyone that I do business with as a whole!  Merry Christmas.

So, we have a contest going, where I will pick the winner tomorrow morning.  Updates to follow.  (Note that Tim Tyler from Ohio won the contest, where his guitar is scheduled to be delivered on Xmas Eve…sweet).

I put up a Sale over the weekend, as some may have noticed.

10% OFF our already Discounted or On Sale Classical Guitars – Flamenco Guitars or Acoustic Guitars.

The only limitation here is that the guitar’s price must be $3899 or higher.  So, an Adalid Classical Guitar – Adalid Model goes for $4500, I have it on Sale for around $3900, she qualifies for another 10% off.  Minus another $390 gets you down and around $3500-3550 for the guitar DELIVERED!

Free Shipping to the 50US still applies.

USE Code “XMAS10OFF” – just copy and paste the code into your Checkout Page (you’ll see the box for it when you get there).

My prices are NOT adjusted.  The same price that was there last week is there this week.  (I’m too busy to worry about adjusting prices…I have too many guitars…it would take me forever to adjust the prices anyways).  If anything, I actually lowered a few guitars even further, so this is definitely the time to take advantage.

The sale applies to any guitar over $3899.  So…whatcha waiting for?  Call me, or write, or just buy the guitar you’ve been looking at and couldn’t convince yourself to pull the trigger. Pull baby…pull  LOL

Originally, I had this sale running until December 20, 2013.  But, I didn’t understand that this meant the sale was over December 19th at 11:59.  Nice?  Not.

So, I’ve adjusted it forward 2 days, meaning that this Sale is over December 23, 2013 at 11:59PM.

No rain checks, no back dating, no forward dating it.  This pertains to existing inventory in my stock, in hand, priced at $3899 or higher.  I run a sale like this to move out inventory that might be sitting around.   Take advantage of it.  I won’t be running a sale again for a while.  Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

New Recordings for New Classical Guitars

By Blog, Latest From Rich No Comments

Morning All,

Glen Perry Classical Guitar

Glen Perry Classical Guitar

So a luthier writes to me yesterday, making me realize how far behind I am in my updates and recordings.  He sent me a guitar in late August and I was only able to look at it yesterday?  Wow, that’s busy, no?  LOL …  actually, that’s not funny.  I am very busy with so many aspects of this business.  Falling way behind, so…. OK, I woke up early, looked at my To Do List and started to bang out the guitars and write about them.

I started this list in September.  I’m updating again as of October 18, 2013 and will continue to do so thru the weekend. I’m going to use this page to update the recordings as they happen over the next week or so.  I can’t believe how far behind I am.  I’ve done all the below guitars and I still have 16 more to record?  Seriously???

But….Nice guitars….tough life here!  I have to play all these fine babies…boo hoo, feel bad for me…hehehehe…enjoy.  Rich

Measurements and media are all up to date for each of the listed guitars below.  Nice feeling to catch it all up again. I pride myself on keeping an up to minute update of my entire site, day in and day out.  Inventory is always up to date, if anyone was wondering.

Avoid Fausto Perez Casiraghi & Guitar Excelsior

By Blog, Latest From Rich 12 Comments

Before I begin, I want to point out that I am keeping this post at the top of my Blog Posts so it is easily found.  I will also say this.  Avoid this person at all costs.  Read below to understand why.

There are more updates below (dated April 25, 2014) – importantly, he now has lost his fake name Casiraghi, and goes by Fausto Perez – he also has a few other aliases, but all you have to do is say Fausto behind his back and he’ll turn around.

October 27, 2014 – Apparently, the police and or Immigration didn’t finish the job on this lying prick.  A new update is forthcoming, but apparently, he’s too stupid to lie well enough to get away with his typical crap.  It is evident that he is still pretending to be a diamond dealer of some ridiculous sort.  I received a call today, and will await further info before adding to this twisted and most sordid tale of a sad little man who thinks it’s okay to steal from people.  I will update shortly.

_______

Being a man of my word, I said I would expose a person and/or business that exercises bad practices and ethics, at the end of June 2013, if he did not do the right thing by a customer of his, who asked me for my help in dealing with him.  This relates to me in that I became involved in this mess simply because the luthier (I use the term loosely as applied to Fausto) never informed the client of the overall situation, making it seem that I did something wrong or unethical.  You play games with me and my business and reputation, you better put body armor on.  So….Here goes….now mind you, I use language here, so I would say this is R-rated at best.  What?  He’s a lying prick.

Before we begin, this story is growing as I have investigated more and more of what is going on, and the abuses that pile on to me, my family, clients, and friends.  Truth is, I knew him for a bullshit artist back in 2011, but I found him insignificant and unworthy of my time.  In other words, I have better things to do.  But, in light of what I’ve learned in the past 8 months, since receiving a particular phone call, described below, back in January of 2013, well…things change…..

As I find out more in the last few days (bear in mind that this was written originally back in July of 2013….there are numerous updates strewn within, but chronologically listed toward the bottom), my thoughts are a little bit (okay, a lot of bit) of a running stream of consciousness.  As of right now, there are 3 running themes going on at the same time.  But the main overall and overriding theme is that Fausto Perez Casiraghi is a lying, thieving crook.   He will steal from his partners, his friends, his close friends, and anyone else who falls for his sappy “feel sorry for me” bullshit.  He will steal you dry.  He could care not one bit for you and the trouble he will cause you.  Fuck him.  No worries, I know, tough words, very direct, n0?  I explain….

__________________

fausto_casiraghi-imagesFausto Perez  Casiraghi is the owner of the business(es).  He is apparently Italian, but I now doubt this.  I think he’s Dominican.  He’s about 6’3″ with curly dark hair, sometimes worn in a bun at the back of his head, oily skin, and a big nose.   See photo to the right.  He calls himself an enologist or a wine expert.  He says his father is a wine maker and distributor in Italy.  His mother lives in Dominican Republic.  He says that he is married, or was married to a woman by the name of Mercedes.  I could never get a straight answer from him.  Typical liar behavior.

He also calls himself Fausto Antonio Casiraghi.  He uses this alias to sell violins in Italy.  See “sidenote” toward the bottom of this post.

He used to own Guitar Excelsior.  He claimed to be a Luthier making and fixing classical guitars, violins, violas and cellos.

Location was 2360 Amsterdam Ave, Suite 5C, NYC NY 10033

He now says that he’s located at:

28W 27th St 2nd Floor
New York, NY 10001
info@faustocasiraghi.com
Tel: 917-601-0146
Fax: 917-601-0147

He now professes to be a cinematographer and photographer.  LMAO  He operates under the same Excelsior model name.   He just calls it ExcelsiorEffect.com  Whooo, very fancy.

Here’s a link to his bullshit profile on LinkedIn (Fausto Perez Casiraghi LinkedIn Profile)

Please look it up, look at his picture, remember it, and when you see him, run as fast as you can away from him.  It’s all bullshit, but it has his picture and THAT is useful.  But, I digress….

He has links to the PPA – PPSNYS – and the ASC  – Try to find him in their databases?  LMAO again.  Nowhere to be found.  Just another scam in a long line of bullshit scams in his less than stellar life.

What is he?  A professional bullshit artist, who will have no problem taking your money and disappearing.  Actually, he’s not even that smart.  He just sticks around and gives you excuses until you’re blue in the face.

Here’s what he did:

Him and I did business together here and there.  Luthier work, guitar stuff.  I would send him repair work, my own or other customers.  I can’t tell you how many times he did a less than horrible job, incomplete, going so far as to not restring guitars.  I reluctantly gave him one or two more chances.  He never failed to disappoint.  I had to stop doing business with him.

Here’s what he did, to me, and more importantly, to a customer of his….pay attention now….

He had a guitar, one that he wanted to consign to me.  It was a Casimiro Lozano – Spruce with Brazilian RW.  Nice guitar.  Worth about $7.5K or so.

He asked me to sell it for him.  I listed it for something like $6K.  It sat for a month or two, until June of 2012.  He then asked me to buy the instrument from him, as he did not want to wait for the consignment thing.  Happens all the time with my customers.  No worries.

I gave him $3800 for the guitar.  A more than fair price given my out of pocket and risk, etc.  I would have given any one else less.  But, he was my friend and possibly my partner in another business (more on that another time).

He may wish to argue the details with me.  To knock that bullshit down to earth, the Check # was 1133 out of my business account, in the amount of $5300, written to him.  I can send him, you or anyone else, a copy of the check.  $3800 toward the Casimiro Lozano and $1500 toward the repair of a guitar, one in he which he did a less than inferior job.  The notation on the check and in my check book states clearly, “Guitar Repair and Casimiro Lozano CG Consignment Settlement”.

Move on to 4 months + later…..

The great storm of Sandy hit me, flooded me, the Lozano Guitar, among 0thers, was destroyed.  I worked for 5+ months on the insurance side of this guitar and the rest of my business, and my home destruction.  I settled everything with an amazing amount of work.  but again, I digress.

In January of 2013, I’m walking towards the back end of the NAMM show in Anaheim, CA when my phone rings.  I click my ear piece.   A guy, calls himself Lee, says, “hi, where’s my guitar”?

“What guitar”?

“The Lozano that Fausto gave to you to sell on consignment for me”.

Dead silence on my end of the phone.  My head is spinning, rather quickly, that someone would have the audacity to pawn off someone else’s guitar and pocket the money for themselves.

“Rich……..Rich….you there”?

“Yeah, I’m here”, where I proceed to ask as many questions as possible, having to sympathize with Lee about what Fausto did to him, etc.  I tell Lee that I will do what ever it takes to help him get his money back from Fausto.  He thanks me, we hang up, and I text Fausto immediately, warning him to do the right thing, and give this guy his money.

In typical fashion, he tells you everything you want to hear, but never produces.   Here’s the last text I got from Fausto, when I asked him (maybe I told him), to do the right thing by Lee.

Right after the phone call from Lee, on Jan. 25, 2013 @ 3:12PM, I text Fausto, “Lee, who owns the Lozano, just called me…u know the rest of the story…do the right thing, fausto.  Givr him his money got the gtr.  This is just wrong”.  Now, I typed it exactly the way I texted it from CA.  Obviously, I was saying, give him his money for the guitar.

Fausto responds within 10 minutes, “Is nothing wrong he was away and I was away; we didn’t got the chance to catch up..! I already spoke with him!  Thanks for your concerns.

Six months later, Lee calls me to say that Fausto just keeps putting him off, buying himself more time (a huge Fausto tactic, one employed by most inferior and stupid con artists).  I continue the story below, but a thought occurred to me and I have to write it down before I move on….

He has no problem lying to you.  He has no problem taking money from you.  Again, he has no problem never giving you what your money should have bought.  He has no problem giving you a sob story about his life, his father, his mother, his sister, his business, his partners, who stole from him, who cheated him, etc.  Heck, he once told a supplier in the tonewood business that his grandfather or father had died, or was seriously ill, but had his sister write the email to the supplier, that he couldn’t get a check to him because he’s in Italy dealing with the death of his father, for 4 months!, etc.  Crap like that.  It took me a few minutes, but I was able to find the email that he “proudly” forwarded to me.  Here’s the email from a Valencia P. (her name is private for her sake, as she is another person used by Fausto, to further his own bullshit and nefarious gains) on behalf of Fausto to someone who Fausto clearly owed money

———-

My name is Valencia P.   I’m the account receivable manager at Oenosophy
> Imports, I’m contacting you on behalf of Fausto Casiraghi who is the son of
> the owner of this enterprise and whom I’ve been helping on his private
> business Guitar Excelsior as well, firstly accept my apologies, I was

——–

Honestly, you can’t make this stuff up.   He actually was beaming to me that he could lie so effectively to someone.  This is when I knew without a doubt that he was someone that I could NOT be associated with in any capacity.  Oenosophy is a “wine importation and distribution company” and I use the quotes very vividly, owned by Fausto (at least I think so), and one that he tried to make me President of, running the company, etc.

Mind you, I’ve given Fausto money, but I was redressed very quickly with collateral that I sold, that more than compensated me for my trouble.  So, I’m square with him, though that is my own doing.  If it were up to him, he’d have fleeced me as easily as anyone else.  Bear in mind, that I’m upset with him for doing this to OTHER people.  I need it to stop, and I’ll be gotdammed if I’m going to shut up when I see someone hurting or robbing someone else.  Yes, Fausto, that’s something you can count on, and oh, by the way, fuck you for thinking I would let you get away with the mistreatment of another human being.

He knows nothing of or very little about wine.  He certainly knows less about running a company.  He is only an expert at stealing from you.

I’m just finding out about the following in the last 2 days, now looking further into Fausto and his bullshit.  The unmitigated nerve of this person!

Bear in mind the name Oenosophy Imports, Ltd.

He will tell you that the address of the company is in  Bay Shore, NY.  at 93 South Penataquit Ave.

For chrissakes, that’s my address!  I have nothing at all to do with Oenosophy or Fausto.  He will give you a phone number, 631-647-4572 for the company.  That’s MY studio phone number for MY business!!

He has even gone so far as to use my Home Address and Phone number in his business listings?  Seriously?  You gotta be kidding me, yet there is no joke here.  It is now costing me huge time and effort to remove myself from this debacle.  Unbelievable gall from this nickel-lined prick.  He says he has nothing to do with this.  Apparently, specific information via Dun & Bradstreet, with specific income, contact listings (me and my home), amount of employees, etc are all entered on line by a ghost.  D&B picked $140K in income out of thin air and posted this information themselves.????   Seriously?  He actually denies this, doing this, or using any of this false information to steal from others.  He then can point them towards me, as if I’m responsible?  Un-freaking-believable.

In other words….Oenosophy Imports, Ltd, a wine importation and distribution company is a construct by Fausto.  Yes, it may even have a corporate charter, a NY State number, EIN, but it is simply a shadow.  He does nothing with it.  He’s so stupid as to let the web site die.  http://www.oenosophy.com/ Check for yourself.  He’s a lazy liar, a thief without conviction, or the foresight to even attempt to get it right.  Yet, still moderately successful at stealing from people.   It’s simply a function of good people falling for his bullshit, his innate ability to con good people of their hard earned time and money.

Now I see that he has listed my address, my name, and my home phone number as the primary contact for Oenosophy thru Dun & Bradstreet and other business submission listings.  Yet, he has the audacity to say I am not involved.  I swear to the gods, I’m going to kick his immigrant ass all the way back to his fucking home country if I ever see him again.

His word is worth nothing.

His talent is worth less.

NEVER give him money or anything of value.  You will regret it.

I have another instance, where a Far Eastern Classical Guitarist, commissioned Fausto to build a guitar for him.  For months on end, beyond the expected date of the guitar to be delivered, Fausto held the client off, using the guitar to show other customers his work.  6 months beyond expected delivery, I know nothing further of the deal or if the client ever received his guitar.  But, mind you, Fausto was paid in full, begging the client for the money for the guitar, or it would never be finished!  Gotdam, you gotta give him credit for balls of steel, no?

We now have definitive proof that he is a thief.  He fully believes that he is entitled to anything that is yours.

He is such a spineless prick, with no pride…he will ask you, nay, beg you to “Pay my phone bill, pay my credit card, open a bank account, put money in it and give me access”….crap like that again!  I can say this because he literally asked me to do this for him.  For collateral in guitars, I paid his cell phone bill once,  simply because it was going to get shut off.  Seriously, the gall of this prick.  It’s incredible he can walk given the size of his balls.

Oh, yes, and god help you if you “annoy” him by calling to “ask” for your money.  Here’s an example from a text sent to someone by him, where they are simply asking for answers to financial and fiduciary issues, which are his responsiblity…”I’m starting thinkin in making a complaining department just for your calls”.

The seeds are now planted for him to start acting as a child instead of stepping up and being a man, holding true to his responsibility.  But, here’s the issue: he never planned on stepping up.  His only plan has ever been to fleece you of your hard earned money, to rob you of your time, and to play upon the fabric of your sanity.

Continuing the above story about the consigned guitar, he persistently put Lee off, repeatedly, even giving him a guitar to hold that is worth much less than the $3800 he owes Lee.  Lee has a written agreement from Fausto detailing the deal, signed and so on.  I will gladly post this among other info to my blog, adding to this entry.  To date, he has not produced the money.  Clearly, he has no intention of doing so.  As far as he’s concerned, I and Lee and anyone else are “faulking preeks” (fucking pricks) to use his vernacular and we can all go to hell.  Lee asked me to help him with the guitar.  I am now doing so.  I will sell the guitar given to him as collateral, but Lee will take a hit on this entire deal.  A hit he shouldn’t have to take.  A good portion of this email is listed at the bottom of this post, for your inspection.

I warned Fausto repeatedly that I will post this information and anything else detailing this deal.  I gave him fair chances to make this right, well over 2 weeks, from the middle of June 2013.  I gave him until June 30, 2013 to settle his account with Lee or I would post the details of his deal with Lee and anything else that I know of and or have hard proof of, moving forward.

Instead, he ignored my warnings, and then, smartly(?), chose to call me a drug addled liar to Lee (see email below, at the bottom of this post), all while tripping up over his own lies in the face of the facts that Lee had proof of, sitting on his desk in writing.  Christ, what a freak.  A running moronathon.  He has chosen to ignore it all.  So be it.

My turn.

This entire blog entry is a warning, a sincere, no bullshit, “listen to the words I am speaking” kind of siren alert that this person is to be avoided at all costs.

I warn you, do not do business with this cheat.  He is a liar.  He will stall you.  He will play on your sympathies.  He will never deliver.  Ever.

He will flat out steal from you, money, guitars, violins, cellos, photography equipment (oh yes, that’s how he launched his career in photography and cinematography..by stealing someone’s equipment), whatever you have that is valuable, he will attempt to get his dirty paws into, etc.  Give him nothing, do not waste your time, run like bloody hell when you see him, hang up when he calls, call the police if he persists….

Let me repeat this…..HE WILL STEAL FROM YOU.  Thousands of dollars, tens of thousands, and more if you give him the opportunity.

He will show no regret, no remorse, he is stone cold in this regard.  You will never be done with him.  He will get in your head, make you question your own sanity, and then he will have the bold faced gall and audacity to ask you for more money, while he preys upon your sympathies, your good nature, your generosity, and your humanity.  You will end up feeling like a used condom by the time he’s done with you.

You’ve been warned.  Richard F. Sayage  – Feel free to call me with any questions.  I’m more than happy to warn you via phone as well.

July 7, 2013 update.  Fausto continues to ignore my request for him to make this right with Lee.  I have given him every opportunity.  He has probably constructed a fantasy in his mind that he is right, justified, and so on.

He has no problem lying, stealing, stalling, etc.  He goes so far as to continue to lie to Lee regarding aspects of a “written” agreement, signed by Fausto himself?  So now he’s exhibiting expert levels of stupidity.  Nice…

August 16th, 2013 update.  I have received some very disturbing phone calls from other individuals the past few nights regarding other issues of theft and fraud on a much larger level.  Respecting their privacy and their legal actions, we will, together, at the appropriate time and with the permission of the associated attorneys, publish all details and facts regarding this latest set of atrocities committed by Fausto Perez Casiraghi against other individuals.  Game on motherfucker.

August 17,2013 update – I am now posting all information to Facebook and LinkedIn and Twitter.  People need to be aware of this lying prick and avoid him like a disease.  Side note, yet relevant.  I am considering legal action against him for misrepresentation, corporate fraud, and any associative charges I can bring against him for involving me, my family and my home in his Oenosophy scam.  I will be contacting every relevant government agency on Monday, from the District Attorney to the NY State Sales Tax Dept, to the IRS, and any Federal and State Offices related to bringing this to a correct resolution.  I will be starting with NYS Division of Corporations, State Records and UCC .  I will be in touch with Dun & Bradstreet and work diligently to correct this patently incorrect ownership and contact information naming me, my home and my home phone number as the primary contact to his bullshit Oenosophy Imports, Ltd company.  I can’t wait for it to be Monday morning.  The phones are gonna get lit up!  I’ll have every related government agency with his name on their lips by the end of the day.  Nice…

By the time I’m done with him, he won’t be able to leave the country, as much as he may wish to do so.  I will have him imprisoned, and then bring civil charges up against him.

The difference is, as I told him when I warned him to do the right thing by Lee….you want to piss me off, you want me to make you my mission, you got it.

You use me, my home, my family, my phones for your own scamming bullshit, to steal money from other people, a lot of money, and then believe that nothing is going to happen?  Get real.  Now I’m your worst fucking nightmare jackwipe.   How’s that for balls to the wall clarity?

On top of all of this, in the email below, he threatens me with Harassment and Cyber Bullying.  Here’s the definition for the sake of the uninformed jackhole named Fausto Perez Casiraghi –

Cyberbullying typically consists of use of posts, forums, journals and other online means to present a victim in a false and unflattering light.

Of course, the definition is broader as the lawmakers attempt to refine their overall understanding of this type of legal abuse, but the general gist is to paint a false picture of an individual to do harm.  I state clearly that I mean to do him harm, legal harm.  Tit for tat, asswipe.  You do me harm, you do our customers harm, I’m coming after you in a huge way with and by every legal means possible.

But, Gods help me, if any of what I have said or written is false, may I be struck down in a fiery flash of lightning to silence me.  I represent and will say under oath that everything I state above and below this sentence is true to the absolute best of my knowledge, with texts, facts, emails, letters, checks, checkbook entries, expense entries, and paperwork to back up everything stated here.  As for unflattering, he does that to himself.  So, uh, cyberbully your ass to the bathroom and kiss it to the sky, sleazeball.

He also threatened me today, when I confronted him with the facts.  What a pissant.  He actually says to me, in a text, “I’m being very patient with you Richard I’ll go to your house this week hope you face me like a man…then proceeds to call me a “worthless piece of shit”.  Mind you, I wasn’t exactly nice to him either…  hehehehehe…..I basically had to tell him directly that any attempt to enter on to my property will be treated as trespassing and that he should be able to figure the rest out.

He’s being patient with me?    ??  ???  ????   Seriously?  <shaking my head in disbelief>  How does he walk around with those big friggin’ balls bangling and jangling?  lmao

The worst.  He’s involved my family.  He’s involved my children!  <shaking my head in absolute disbelief>  As if you don’t know me, you sonofabitch.  My children!  They have to answer the phone, my home phone, from angry and upset people that you have stolen from!!!   Are you out of your stupid mind?   You point people to me, saying that I will guarantee their investment in your bullshit company?  <still shaking my head in disbelief>  You are honestly this stupid?

Notice, I’m being very clear here.  Even at the risk of hurting myself, I cannot care at this point.  He lies, he steals, he points it all back at me, then blames me for the problem, then threatens me, then tries to explain his way out of it.  All “classic” Fausto.  Same pattern, different month.  Now he’s scared, and quite frankly, he should be very frightened.  The NYC District Attorney is my next call.  I will not hide from what I am doing.  I know I am being transparent.  This is for the benefit of anyone else who is thinking of doing ANY kind of business with Fausto Perez Casiraghi.

This is how stupid this jack off is….he steals, from what I can tell, well over $100K from various individuals (might be more…a lot more), and he’s going down all for a $3800 guitar.  Honestly, I would never have looked at any of this if not for this innocent, yet very meaningful phone call from Lee, regarding HIS Lozano Classical Guitar.  He involves me (his worst mistake).  He then proceeds to say I’m NOT involved (holy crap…this idiot is a joke).

He uses my name, home address and phone number for his scamming bullshit.  He involves my children, my wife, my home.  I can’t imagine a more stupid approach.  Game on is right.

August 19, 2013 Update – More disturbing reports are coming back to me about more people being taken in by this crook.  More people have come forward admitting that they were taken by Fausto for 10’s of thousands of dollars each.  They are embarrassed to speak out.  Not anymore.  We are adding to a criminal c0mplaint that will be comprehensive and ready for pursuit, hopefully by the end of the week.

I warned you, Fausto.  Now that I am beginning to understand what kind of horrible man you are, nothing will stop me from pursuing every legal avenue to bring you to justice.

He says to me, in a text, dated August 18, 2013 – and I quote – “I stole?? till now I’m don’t need to steal anything in my life.  I’ve a brand new guitar I made for the JERK!!  Then he change his mind I could take him to court cause he sing a purchase agreement.  Instead I try to work things out with him.”

He’s so convincing, this in an attempt to believe his own lies.  This is a really bad person.  He needs to be taken off the street or sent back to his own country.  He doesn’t deserve to live in our country.

Sidenote – It has been discovered that he is selling a violin(s) in Italy under the name Fausto Antonio Casiraghi – see the following link.  He’s not even intelligent enough to not use his old company name of Excelsior and Fratelli  ???  Idiot.  The old website, once clicked through, brings you to his photography site!  LMAO

August 21,2013 update – Now I go deadly silent.  The worst kind, Fausto.  Read and burn.  Guess.  Think.  Where’s this going?  What am I doing now?  Who have I informed?  Whom have I spoken with, regarding you and your thefts from good people, regarding your corporate misrepresentation, of yourself and worse, me?  Who has taken vital interest in you?

Guess.  Think.

Here’s a hint……

On second thought.

Burn, motherfucker.  Burn….

September 4, 2013 update – It is so terribly quiet, is it not Fausto?  So very quiet.

_______________________________

September 14, 2013 update – I am hearing tell that he is taking violins from luthiers around the world (I am aware of 2 of them so far) and not paying for them, giving them his typical runaround bullshit story (stories).  People from all over are getting in touch with me about his scheming, lying, stealing, bullshit behavior.

I’ve also heard that he is buying classical guitars from China and selling them with his own label as if he built them for an incredible premium.  If any of this is true, what an incredible piece of worthless shit.

I’m coming for you, prick.   Stone cold, asswipe.

There are more updates down below…he will not cease and desist.

Personal Sidenote:

It all sounds very personal.  It is…

Even at the expense of my business.  My site and my business are very public.  I am using it to bring this man to justice.  I cannot care about any consequence to me or my business.  If anyone out there does not understand the horror of what this terrible man has done to good people, hurting them, stealing from them, their money and their sanity, while having zero remorse for his actions, while continuing to pursue an unlawful and felonious life, then I don’t want to do business with them.  He’s going down, no matter the personal cost to me.  I’ll be silent when he’s made accountable for his actions.

Here’s a thought that’s been hitting at me for the last few days, that I simply had to add to this debacle.  You have to read the email below along with this thought to get the depths of how truly twisted he is within the confines of his own mind and the borderline sociopathic behavior he exhibits towards others and their possessions.

In a recent text conversation with him, where I warn him again that he needs to do the right thing by Lee, he twists it in such a way that he lays responsibility for stealing from me and Lee (actually he steals from Lee and then blames me, pointing Lee back to me for the money and the guitar), in Lee’ s lap.  In his fucked up world, Lee was supposed to buy a guitar from him, but didn’t, so this allows Fausto to simply steal his money?  Now, I don’t know if Lee was supposed to buy a guitar.  In the end, does it matter?  Of course not.  People back out of deals all the time.

In bringing this up to him, he says this to me, and I quote and retype the text verbatim: “Then he (Lee) re appears with a change of mind he don’t want guitar but money instead!!  And you instead of support me just make of all this what you are an expert a major turmoil !  (this is dated August 18, 2013 at 12:02PM)

So, let’s get this straight.  He takes the guitar from Lee.  He says he will fix it.  He does an okay job, not great.  Lee pays him for the fix.  Lee asks Fausto to sell the guitar for him.  Lee may or may not agree to buy a classical guitar from Fausto (good luck getting that).  Fausto tells Lee that he will send the guitar to me to sell.  Note that I know nothing of this so far.

Fausto tells me (pay attention now) that the guitar is his to do with as he pleases.  He consigns it with me.  After a couple of months, in June of 2012, Fausto says that he needs the money for the guitar.  I agree to purchase it from him for $3800 (a more than fair price).  He takes and keeps the money, never giving a dime to Lee or telling him what has transpired.  Intent to defraud is now confirmed.  Lee asks Fausto about the guitar in January of 2013.  He is told that I have the guitar and he should contact me?  Lee calls me.  We quickly figure out that Fausto has stolen Lee’s guitar and or money.  Move forward to August of 2013.  Fausto tells me that I do not support him in stealing from Lee….

Did you catch that?  I didn’t support him in his theft.  LOL  Even better, blame me for having the guitar, but then don’t support me against Lee.  Holy shit.  You can NOT make this up.   He then, and again, I can’t make this up, calls me a “worthless piece of shit”.   Let me understand.  I don’t support your theft, which you try to pin blame on me, and I’m the piece of shit?  Seriously?   LMFAO … it’s actually making me laugh fairly hard while I write this down.  It’s almost comical.  Almost.  But see, here’s the rub; that’s when I get quiet.   When I go quiet, there’s real danger present.

Fausto is the kind of person that is too stupid to realize that there are people out there who will make him accountable.  People who are not afraid to go after the bad guy and do the right thing.  People who smile at the thought of putting the bad guy behind bars.  I like those people.  Quite a bit.

Twisted.  <shaking my head in disgust and disbelief at the sheer audacity and stupidity of this moron>  It was troubling me this morning.  I had write it down and share.  email below…enjoy, it actually has some humor in there somewhere.

——————————————————————————————

I’ve said it many times.  It bears repeating.   Avoid him.  Always go in the opposite direction of him.  Call the police if he persists.  Do whatever it takes to stay as far away from him as possible.  He means to do you harm.  He means to steal from you.  He has ulterior motives.  There is always an agenda where he is concerned.  He means to get inside your head and fuck with you.  The moment money, possessions, business, an opportunity of his comes up, or his phone bill, a credit card, the conversation turns towards money in some way, or any bullshit that he needs comes up (because, in the end, it’s always about him)….ding ding ding….warning warning, danger danger.  I can’t say it any clearer than this.

——————————————————————————————

email between Lee and Fausto, dated July 2, 2013, regarding the Casimiro Lozano Classical guitar (Spruce/Brazilian RW…really nice by the way) owned by Lee, sold by Fausto as his own, who kept the money for himself, and keeping Lee, his customer, at bay for almost 2 years, by this point.

Fausto:  I feel very upset at the turns this ordeal takes,

L: you’re upset? What about 2 years that you owe me money?

Fausto: specially after I took your word and signature to an agreement on which we agreed to solve this between ourselves and not involves third parties!

L: have the agreement. Nothing in there about third parties. (say hooray, I’m finally a third party…is that a good thing?)

Fausto: I give you a much better guitar in consignment (here Fausto speaks of a guitar that was worth about $3K, vs. Lee’s Lozano, which was worth at least $6-7.5K.  Apparently, Fausto can paint anything any color he wishes to suit his needs) as a collateral for your previous one and later;  even agreed on your new terms, in case I fail to come with the money upon the dateline;

L: I never wanted the cracked guitar. Agreement says that you owe me $3800 and that guitar was collateral.

Fausto: I will authorize you the right of ownership of the instrument, then, you not only try to involves Richard again, but also try to scheme a very nasty action,

L: Richard is acting on his own in writing on his experiences with you. It’s his right to share his perspective (you’re gotdam right it’s my right…but do you like how in Fausto’s stupidity of mental train of thought, I’m NOT involved?  Serious.  No, he didn’t fraudulently represent himself as the owner of a guitar.  Nope, he didn’t keep the cash that I paid by check to him for the guitar?  Nope, I didn’t have to take a phone call from a confused and upset client of HIS, asking for his guitar.  As far as I can tell, uh uh, I’m not involved at all, right?   hehehe, rhetorical sarcasm.  What a moron). I’m grateful for the help he’s offering me in getting out of a bad deal with you.

Fausto: which I was already bring it to the authorities, “Harassment” and “Cyber Bullying” is a felony, a crime heavy punished by law in New York State, maybe your mentor (apparently, I’m Lee’s mentor…idiot)  in this case is not aware due to the heavy consumption of drugs he’s accustom to use and reason why I don’t wasted my time replying him, he have not rights into this action (here it is again, I have no rights in this action, but hey,, at least I have heavy consumption of drugs going for me) and he is limited to the purchasing and the sale of the instrument at that time period.  (This is great, Fausto Perez, attorney at law…I’m going to sic the NYS Sales Tax Authority on him just to teach his sorry, sleazy ass a lesson…hehehe I actually have his EIN and gods help me, I’m a gonna use it…LOL).

L: It’s also a felony to sell someone else’s property (my guitar), keep the money, and say nothing. It’s called fraud.

Fausto: I also want to remind you that at the time that instrument went for sale;  You was supposed to buy an instrument from me, (the ultimate turnaround by Fausto the Sleazy…it’s your fault I stole from you.  You didn’t buy a guitar from me, so I kept your guitar and sold it to Rich and kept the money for myself.  Nyah).

L: You know that’s not true. Let’s be real Fausto.  (now Lee, you’ve gone too far…this is clearly asking too much)

Fausto: that was the main reason why I involve myself in this, an also I’ve done an extra work at not cost including refinishing the varnish, re-conditioning the frets, replacing the fingerboard and re-setting the action which you remember was why you brought the instrument to me in first instance cause the neck of the guitar was severely warped, (look at how he justifies himself to the customer and possibly even to himself…the worst kind of liar….if he says it enough times, it becomes true to himself in his own special fantasy land).

L: You were paid for the work. I have records.  (but Lee, don’t you understand, it’s not enough to pay for the work….you have to PAY….really, people, is this not enough already?)

Fausto: I till now haven’t mention this, but if I brought the guitar in the condition in which you leave it at my place the sale never will happen. At this point I still have not money to repay you back which I will love to in the first instance, but right now I’m going to a heavy hardship, (and there it is….you were waiting for it…the wait is over....now the sob story begins…I’m in a hardship, I have a no money, I can’t a pay a my rent, my back a hurts, I need a medication, I have a no food, a goddammit, leave me alone, stop the harassing of me.  Etc……….get it?    got it?   Good….gods, what an asshole).

L: You are in hardship, so you put me through hardship instead.

and blah blah blah from Fausto the con artist.  Please note that all comments in italics are mine and mine alone and that I appropriate all copylefts, and that they are my own thoughts, comedic or sadly lacking in comedy thereof, and that no one else has to bear any burden of speaking these words, or their consequence heretofore whereverIsayIwanttosayitwhenIsaidit.  In other words, I’m solely responsible for the words in italics.  By the way, if you haven’t gotten the gist of this post, Fausto Perez Casiraghi is a crook.  How’s that for straight talk?

———-

April 25, 2014 Update – Fausto was arrested on Easter Day, April 20, 2014 – among the charges was theft.  The short of it is that he attempted to steal 2 small paintings from an auction house in Manhattan. (there is a lot more to the story, including the neighboring flea market, where he attempted to immediately hawk his stolen goods, to people with whom he already owed money (can’t make this stuff up), highlighting his massive stupidity, his greed and his stupidity…oh, I said that already, right?  :-).   He has a mandated court appearance in (I believe) late May 2014.  So, this from the man who says, I don’t a steal from a nobody.  (yeah, I’m making fun of him….mainly because he is NOT Italian).   His legal name is Fausto Perez – the last name, Casiraghi, is a construct, in a lame attempt to align himself and his bullshit family name to a wealthy European family.  His father’s last name is Perez.  He is Dominican.  He is also an illegal alien.  He is in the United States illegally.

Check out this tidbit from the logbook of Fausto Perez?  hehehe…he is now a diamond dealer, out of the NY Diamond District, with a closet sized office in the district.  He claims to be of Jewish faith, very religious, very observant, wearing the appropriate head gear and all?  His latest scam, which only serves to display the absolute disrespect and depravity of the individual, who will DO anything to get over on other people.

A very observant lady, with whom Fausto did some business, caught on to him quick, and set him up for the arrest.  This husband and wife team have my thanks and my respect.  I will withhold their names until I have more information and their permission.

I will further reiterate.  This scumbag needs to be outted.  He needs to be avoided.  Call the police the moment you see him.  Do NOT give him anything.  Information, personal or otherwise.  Do NOT invite him to your home or your business.  Do not engage him at all.  You see him…call the POLICE.  He is (or will be ) wanted by the authorities.  Whether the DA’s office, whether warrants for his arrest, whether the INS or any agency of US Immigration, it doesn’t matter.  He needs to be locked up and put away. AVOID him at all costs.

—–

January 18, 2016 – He continues to be a simple, hostile, ill-informed liar and thief.  New posts, messages from other people, emails, phone calls, etc. keep coming into me.  He persists in his thieving ways, simply because he knows nothing else.

Last month, a Notice came to me from the NY State Tax Authority, demanding payment on yearly taxes, franchise taxes, etc for Oenosophy Imports, Fausto’s bullshit nonsensical company that generates nothing but the bullshit he spouts.  The bill came in for over $1500, to which they are adding penalties and interest.  I kindly and professionally advised him of the notice.  He proceeded to insult me, provoke me, insult me again, and so on.  Hmmm, what to do?  So, while we are texting back and forth, to which I kept it very professional, I was on the phone with the NYS Tax Authority.  They took my address off their list for Oenosophy Imports (which I had asked Fausto to do over 2 years ago), then asked for their advice on the matter.  They advised filing a Fraud Report on the individual in question, and a few other procedural filings, which I was happy to do, all while texting with SpongeBob Asshole Pants.  I then decided to go further and file another report with INS, as I’m certain he is here in the USA illegally.  Keep poking the bear, moron.  Keep poking.  Our system must be broken.  A small-time lying thief is allowed to be on our streets, one who continually hurts people emotionally and financially.  Proof enough the system is not efficient.  <shaking of the head> He needs to be deported or incarcerated.

January 2018 – I am now informed by a nice lady that he is telling people that he is a doctor – a heart surgeon or something to that effect.  Wow!  I don’t know how he walks around with those big ass jangling testocoles (yes, I spelled it wrong, but it’s funnier).

February 2019 – someone anonymous sent me 2 copies of Fausto’s drivers license from the Dominican Republic – born or named Fausto Antonio Perez Cruz born on February 18, 1979 – don’t listen to his Italian bullshit.  He’s Dominican.  What a ridiculous lying sack of shit this guy is and remains.

Sidenote – I see that a search of his name on the web hits this page first!  Sweet.  Everyone needs to be aware of him and his scam.  I say this sincerely….I only wish that no other person is hurt by this terrible excuse for a human being.
