1972 Manuel Contreras Cedar CSA
Comments
This is a great example of the Contreras workshop, before his double tapa exploratory work. This is old school MG Contreras, signed, clearly a 1A, more in the style of Ramirez, as Manuel continued his experimental work.
The guitar is very clean, with nominal fingernail marking on the top, in and around the rosette. The CSA is superb, old school, not highly figured, but straight-ish, with only a slight curve, lending an instant attractiveness to its overall coloration. The bracing is an unusual, but not for Manuel, 4 fan with sound bars. This emphasizes a large bass response, but not over-powering the mids or the trebles.
Setup is quite good, tweaked by me, cleaned, polished, frets dressed and shined up, where the guitar plays fast and furious. The guitar was reconditioned, where the back was re-sealed, refinished thinner than originally done, and the top finish was reconditioned as well, thinner again, French Polished, allowing her to be louder and more resonant. Smallish dents in and around the rosette, nominal and honest play wear. All rather tiny and hard to see, especially photographically. I will take quadrant shots of the guitar for your convenience.
Obviously, all first class material used by the Spanish master, the guitar is an excellent example of his work from the early 1970’s.
