1977 Manouk Papazian Spruce Flamed Maple
This 1977 Classical Guitar by Manouk is another example of his ability to get a guitar to be super sweet. Her play is soft and easy, her sound is sweet and musical, as most of his guitars evidence throughout the years.
Before I continue, I’m very careful with guitars by Manouk. Reasons I say this aside, I will only touch guitars by Manouk that have his name within the rosette, a tile mosaic (which I really like btw). This means that there is “no doubt” as to who built the guitar.
Aside from everything else, the guitar caught my interest because she is gorgeous. I mean, pretty. The Maple is incredible. The flames and striping are, as some say, “to die for” LOL. The guitar has achieved the patina of golden Spruce and the Maple has it as well.
Clearly an unusual choice of build by Manouk, making her highly unique. The binding work, rosette work, purflings, heck, even the headstock, are absolutely gorgeous.
Her sound is very sweet, very intimate. I cleaned her up, oiled the fretboard, changed the strings to a D’Addario EJ46, giving her a little more warmth. By default, being a Spruce/Maple, she is going to have higher voice. I wanted to add to her depth with the fuller strings. She was quiet at first. Dry even. Honest, I didn’t care for her after cleaning/setup.
She opened up in a big way in the next day under the correct conditions. I speak about that at length below in the recording section. Very clean, very bright, well balanced in the ranges, she has a beautiful bell-like quality to her trebles.
Condition is very good. A string ding behind the bridge parallel to the G string is evident (small dot). Another small ding bass side of the smaller bout. A slight ding in the back. Someone installed plastic protectors on the lower side, as if for suction cup protectors. I can barely see them, but they are there.
Action is low, fast and accessible. I would actually like to see her a bit higher, but she doesn’t make noise unless you absolutely pound the guitar…not advisable! She’s a beauty in all regards. Lovely work and choices by Manouk.

MP3 Audio – papazian-1977 v2 – the guitar surprised the heck out of me. After cleaning her up, re-polishing certain areas, rubbing down the fretboard and a fret cleaning, setup, and re-string, she came out of the gate very slowly. I’m looking down at her, going, “Well, at least your pretty”. I kid you not. Shrug of the shoulders, I told myself I’ll look at her again tomorrow and tweak her set up. Didn’t need to, as it turned out. The right humidity and temperature evident, I picked her up for this recording session, started warming up and the guitar did the same, until I sat there stunned for a moment, with a big smile creeping onto my face. Her basses started making themselves evident, the mids were popping, and the highs started singing with that classical old school NYC luthier build made famous by Manuel Velazquez and of course, Manouk.
So now she’s sounding as pretty as she looks, and don’t kid yourself, she’s one of the prettiest I’ve ever seen. Truth is, I could easily hold on to her as a prime example of what I speak about above.
The first piece I play in the MP3 is Sketch #4, which is a new miniature written by me, E Minor, as a musical exercise but also an intense workout for your P-m-i-a-i-m motion in the Right Hand. These miniatures are supposed to be musical exercises first, but also technical in their Right Hand finger motion. So far, I’m very pleased with them. The guitar makes it even more of a pleasure. You can hear her pop, and I don’t really feel I have the piece in my hands of yet. She’s incredible. Rich
