1987 Thomas Humphrey Millenium Spruce CSA

Comments:

This classical guitar, built by the innovative Thomas Humphrey, is a truly exceptional example of his work.  Sad to say, not all of his guitars were great.  If you actually know what you’re talking about, this is simply a fact, where I am not trying to be mean or dismissive.  He would build four, and one would be extraordinary.   This is one of those that are extraordinary.  Certainly among the best I’ve ever played or seen by him.

As everyone knows, I’m extremely particular about what comes into my studio.  The owner came over and was pleased that I was pleased 🙂

The woods used are beautiful, straight grained, tapping very well.  The CSA is superb, straight-grained for optimal tone production.

Beautiful tone, set up for just about anyone, able to be driven, fat and round, with clear singing highs and basses that do not overwhelm, but complement the overall concert guitar experience.  I love the growl of the mid-voices, while the highs are a beautiful compliment, along with bold and forceful basses.  She is brighter than his typical builds, but it totally works on this guitar with deep booming basses and lilting trebles.  I asked the client, “are you certain you want to sell this guitar”? three times to be sure.  It is that good.

She has an unusual bridge that completely works as far as tone, transmission of energy and uniqueness, adding to the allure of the guitar.

The guitar also comes with a late 1980’s flight case called a Reuer, a precursor to the Calton and Hoffee cases of today.  Very nice in good shape.

Condition is good, with expected honest playing wear from a traveling professional, but it doesn’t detract from her overall stability of construction. There is a stable crack fixed by Aaron Green on the side bout, and another on the back, lower bout, treble side.  I will photograph to the best of my ability.  She is priced appropriately. My photos will show all of this as clearly as I can manage.

Measurements are up to date as are the photos.  The guitar is signed and dated by Thomas on either side of the soundboard by the rosette as well.

Media

Listening with high quality headphones or audio equipment is highly recommended including EQ manipulation, if possible. We record everything flat with just a touch of Reverb to relieve dryness. My goal is to record the guitar as realistically as is possible. I speak in the recordings, my thoughts about the guitar (and possibly other things?).  My speaking also serves to give you my first impressions and to also give you a balance of the engineering (or lack thereof) versus the sound of the guitar.  I simply do not have time to engineer much of anything.  Thanks. Rich

MP3 Audio – 220416-1991 Thomas Humphrey Millenium Spruce CSA – guitar has quite a bit of horsepower, while being a breeze to play.  Voices are superb, from the lilting highs to the deep bellowing basses.  I could have played her all night.
