2013 Alan Chapman #VH1 Cedar Madagascar Smallman Model Classical Guitar
Comments:
She is a really beautiful guitar. Small nail marks in and around the rosette, on the top, with some very slight blemishes, shallow nail scratches, etc. I took photos to attempt to illustrate all of this to you. The guitar was played, as it should be, thus the honest play wear on the top.
The Madagascar Rosewood is dark, chocolate like, with red and yellow grain. Gorgeous and beautiful shape.
Built in the style of Greg Smallman, there is a balsa lattice, layered with graphite material, a multi-layered back, celloed in the style of the Australian lattice build. A worthy build in the Australian style, with a touch of nasality, deeper darker voices, with bells in the trebles and a growl in the mids. Easily played, she is a simple joy to perform a variety of classical repertoire on this fascinating guitar.
Her sound is bold and clear, with good power. The action may seem a bit higher, but I found her easy to play coupled with clarity, which all means an awesome classical guitar. Alan does interesting work. I’ve not ever seen anything but good things from him, and this is an excellent example of his work. This is an excellent guitar, with a deeper, darker tone, tons of power.

Listening with high quality headphones or audio equipment is highly recommended including EQ manipulation, if possible. We record everything flat with just a touch of Reverb to relieve dryness. My goal is to record the guitar as realistically as is possible. I speak in the recordings, my thoughts about the guitar (and possibly other things?). My speaking also serves to give you my first impressions and to also give you a balance of the engineering (or lack thereof) versus the sound of the guitar. I simply do not have time to engineer much of anything. Thanks. Rich
MP3 Audio – 221230-2013 Alan Chapman VH1 Cedar Madagascar Smallman – can be played in a variety of colors and styles, from your typical Australian lattice character to a warm Cedar that is evocative. Able to be pushed, yet responds to a gentle play as well. Phenomenal guitar.
