2013 John Ray #167 Cedar Brazilian RW Classical Guitar

Just Arrived! John Ray of Granada Spain most certainly brings the Granada school to the forefront.  The guitar, decidedly Hauser-ish in her appearance, thinner bodied and much lighter than most, is very bold sounding, clear, and round.  She has a throatiness that I find very attractive, all while the mids and highs are punching and singing.  Superb.  It turns out, as per John, that this guitar or model, his Concert Model, started as a Hauser ’43 copy, where the body transitioned to being a bit thinner, but wider in the plantilla.  Of course, the bracing has been modified and tuned up over the years, 7 struts and a very thin, low bridge reinforcement.  You will notice the bridge is canted to the bass side to allow for natural intonation.

I was slightly misled about it being a Spruce, as the Cedar is really straight and beautiful.  It is confirmed to be a Cedar top. My apologies for the confusion, mine, of course.

This is a guitar I can play for a very long time.  John’s choices of woods, workmanship, machines, look and feel are all excellent.  The man has taste.  She is enjoyable, evocative, with a beautiful voice, set up for the professional who wants or needs to drive her.  All look to be honest play wear, including the nominal string rash behind the bridge and a few light rasqueado marks.  Nothing else to report.  I’ve put some photos of areas, high contrast, to give you a good look.  The guitar plays like a dream.  She’s quite soft on the hands.  A great guitar and outstanding example of the Granada school.

Listening with high quality headphones or audio equipment is highly recommended including EQ manipulation, if possible. We record everything flat with just a touch of Reverb to relieve dryness. My goal is to record the guitar as realistically as possible. I speak in the recordings, my thoughts about the guitar (and possibly other things?).  My speaking also serves to give you my first impressions and to also give you a balance of the engineering (or lack thereof) versus the sound of the guitar.  I simply do not have time to engineer much of anything.  Thanks. Rich

MP3 Audio – 230228-2013 John Ray 167 Cedar Brazilian RW – beautiful and bold sounding, direct and responsive.  She is also quite light in weight. The guitar is in excellent condition as well.  Easily played, easy color and dynamic range.  John is a true master of the Granada school.  The guitar is so much fun to play, from concert to studio.  Love it.
