Comments
The last guitar I had built with Wenge was fantastic, where this magnificent example by Fritz exceeds expectations. You can find more about this wood in my Tonewood Discussion
Inspection was more than satisfactory. The guitar itself is wildly resonant and wholly musical. Workmanship stellar. Machines by Graf are an excellent choice, very unique and personally chosen by Fritz for this particular guitar!
The room was filled with the sound of the guitar and her play is totally accessible, almost effortless. Fritz is a true master, building power, with music, grace and elegance.

From Fritz himself….
I have designed this guitar with all the features I think the ideal instrument should have, including a radiused and elevated fingerboard, a Ryan-style bevel, an acoustic port, and a tail-block access door. Scale length is 650 mm. It features a newly-designed “flare” rosette in teal, as well as a custom set of Graf tuners.
Wenge (pronounced WENN-gay) is a relatively unknown wood to most players, and even to most builders. Nevertheless, it’s a superb tonewood with a remarkably clear, ringing taptone that seems to sustain forever. Ervin Somogyi reportedly called wenge “the new Brazilian rosewood”, and that’s not far off.
#299 continues the Ultralight Guitar Series with double sides and back, a hollow neck, and other internal features designed to create the lightest guitar possible. Even the tuners are Graf ultra-lights. The result is a guitar with extraordinary responsiveness, volume, and color.
Beginning with this guitar I’ve incorporated an unusual asymmetrical graduation pattern into both the top and back. I’ve used asymmetry before in my instruments, but never so extensively. The idea for this change came from reading about recent super-accurate measurements of old Italian violins, many of which it turns out were very asymmetrical. Guitars and violins are not the same structurally, of course, but increasing the bilateral asymmetry in #299, as in a violin, has strengthened the cross-instrument resonances significantly. The resulting sound is very full and rich, with outstanding presence.
