Comments

The guitar is gorgeous, in appearance and voice.  She is another singing angel, superbly setup, using Bob’s trademark neck design that he borrowed from one of the great flamenco masters.  But, there is a difference here in power, voice, sustain and projection.  Bob became fascinated with the beautiful voice of the Daniel Friederich guitar, becoming convinced, as have some of the French masters, that the stiffness of the doubled sides, and a slightly thicker back, all transmit more effectively (efficiently?) to the soundboard.  He then built off of a Hauser plantilla, (Bob is a big fan of both Friederich and Hauser) using his own modified bracing pattern, with superb results.

He is correct!  Wow, is this a powerful guitar, as well as pretty as all get out.  Such sublime power and voicing.  This is a classical guitar at its best.  The sliding door for the port is ingenious.  I would leave it open, personally.  The guitar is buttery in her voice, attack is instant, yet the basses bloom, the mids growl and the trebles simply sing!  Such incredible work on this guitar and really, all of them.  He is so precise, meticulous, even in his polish work, it’s really a pleasure to see such craftsmanship.  Please note that the old school and aged Brazilian RW carries a serious premium.  Bob treated it beautifully, polish is extraordinary, it looks amazing, deep, rich and dark.

Bob is old school, in all ways.  Meeting him, you are immediately taken with his care for his work.  His pride in his work.

He doesn’t mail the guitars to me.  Every time I’ve taken guitars from him, he drives the 1200 or so miles to me and hand delivers them.    If that’s not old school, I don’t what is?  LOL

On this particular occasion, I flew down to Orlando and drove back the next day with 4 guitars, this one among them.  I had to choose 2 from his batch of 7 available, and well, this one was a clear winner.  They were all gorgeous, meticulous in the build, sublime in their sound and play, but I could only choose 2.  The other 2 are the 1971 Hauser II and the 1978 Friederich I now have available.  Bob owned these 2 guitars, studied them thoroughly, made plans, drawings, measurements, thicknesses, attempting to discover the secrets of what made them tick.  Mind you, he was also a student of Manuel Velazquez for over 17 years.  This is why, with authority, I can say the below…

Bob is a great guy, super builder, with an ear and a dedication reserved for the best in the world at what they do.  He is a true master in his craft, one of, if not, the top builder in this country at this time.  His dedication, his knowledge, coupled with his ability to execute is truly extraordinary.  He would never say any of this, but I can and I have said it out loud.  This guitar and the others listed are some of the most beautiful and musical guitars I’ve ever laid hands on.  I am truly honored that Bob has chosen me as his exclusive dealer and representative to the playing public.  I can’t say it any other way.

Listening with high quality headphones or audio equipment is highly recommended including EQ manipulation, if possible. We record everything flat with just a touch of Reverb to relieve dryness. My goal is to record the guitar as realistically as is possible. I speak in the recordings, my thoughts about the guitar (and possibly other things?).  My speaking also serves to give you my first impressions and to also give you a balance of the engineering (or lack thereof) versus the sound of the guitar.  I simply do not have time to engineer much of anything.  Thanks. Rich

MP3 Audio – 220114-2017 Bob Desmond Spruce CSA – recording session at Elite Sound Stage in W. Babylon NY – upcoming video for Samantha’s Lullaby among other pieces, on one of the nicest stages and rooms I’ve been in a long long time.  What a performance and recording venue this place is, built by my cousin Mark Mina.  The guitar sounds so big.  There is zero reverb in this recording.  ZERO.  No engineering, nothing.  Straight flat.  What a guitar!  Easily played.  Bob did a great job.  Great luthier building a super great guitar!

My Solo Book of sheet music is available here if you’re interested.
