2017 Cary Pedicini #8 Spruce Australian Blackwood
Comments
Cary came to visit me personally, bringing one of his guitars for my own examination. A lovely man, easy going and confident in his abilities. I liked him immediately. His guitar as well. Simple, effective, musical and pretty, the guitar made an immediate impression on me, as I played her. She blossomed in my hands, opening up brilliantly. Cary is an Australian luthier building in the Traditional manner, not in the Australian technique, using fan bracing, a bridge pad, sound bars in the back of the board, and utilizing the double-sided technique of Friedrich. Studying extensively with Richard Howell, who lives a do-able 15 minutes away from Cary, he learned the value of excellent tonewoods and the greatness of a living legend. His guitar is proof of this ability to evince a musical expression out of a gorgeous instrument, all in keeping the Spanish and Australian tradition.
Cary is of Italian descent (thus the last name) but lives in a beautiful area of Australia. He chose the woods to honor his heritage and his home, thus the Italian Spruce and the Australian Blackwood. I love stuff like this.
The guitar is beautiful. Her sound is powerful, crisp, clear with beautiful sustain. Action is moderate yet drive-able. The man knows his neck and body angles.
The woods are ridiculously beautiful. Cary used Gidgee woods for the fretboard, a hard and dense hardwood, perfectly suited to a fret board. Pretty as well. It is not traditional looking (in that it is not pitch black, ala stained ebony), but adds an element of art to the guitar, as does the handcrafted Rosette. The Australian Blackwood is light in its ruddy affect, while the Italian Spruce, from the famed Cremona region of Italy, is a superb choice. His work is meticulous, applying a full French Polish finish to the guitar. The hard shell case she comes with is actually quite nice, with a velvet cover all that protects the face of the guitar ala the old Gibson cases. Nice touch.

Media
Listening with high quality headphones or audio equipment is highly recommended including EQ manipulation, if possible. We record everything flat with just a touch of Reverb to relieve dryness. My goal is to record the guitar as realistically as possible. I speak in the recordings, my thoughts about the guitar (and possibly other things?). My speaking also serves to give you my first impressions and to also give you a balance of the engineering (or lack thereof) versus the sound of the guitar. I simply do not have time to engineer much of anything. Thanks. Rich
MP3 Audio – 210106-Cary Pedicini 2017-8 Spruce Australian Blackwood – what a superb guitar, clean voiced, ringing and more powerful than I initially remember. Very nice.
My Solo Book of sheet music is available here if you’re interested.
Video
MP3 Audio for video file – 180305-Pedicini-2017-8 – “Gamma di Preludio” exploring the ranges of the guitar. The guitar is not that yellowish, just the saturation point of the video and edit.
