2018 Peter Oberg #158 Bull Run Cedar American Black Cherry
Comments:
Speaking and dealing with Peter is an absolute pleasure. A consummate professional, he’s also a very nice man and very talented. It’s my pleasure to represent his work through my gallery. The guitar arrived early this Friday morning, where opening her up was a sincere pleasure. Peter is offering one of the finest American guitars I can easily present through our gallery.
Guitar has gone through a full internal and external inspection. First, she’s gorgeous. Meticulous workmanship, it’s very clear that Peter takes much pride in his work. Playing her at first, she was a touch bright. Five minutes later, she started to ooze warmth and then power. Ten minutes later and I was holding a monster, with clarity and power that would make any one envious, luthier or player. This is a superb guitar on every level. I was taken aback at her young voice, regardless of her being a 2018. She is pristine in every way, undeniably brand new, just held by Peter, as he wrote below. The bracing is traditional, in the Hauser fashion. I believe this guitar to be an exceptional value. Recording with her will be a pleasure.
Peter’s follow-up comments on the guitar:
- The label bears the stamp ‘Peter Oberg’, is numbered #158-XP5, dated 2018’
- There is an internal stamp on the internal side of the top, bearing the markings, ‘PDO’
- There is one mother of pearl position marker at the 7th fret.
- The tie-block surround is mitered bone and black/green/white veneer.
- The guitar has a characteristic smell of Port Orford Cedar, the guitar smells awesome, like candy!
- There are two elliptical sound holes in the upper bout sides on either side of the neck.
- Peter kindly corrected a few errors. Everything here is now accurate.
Peter was also kind enough to send me the story behind this particular guitar. It is worth reading. A remarkable guitar.
“This is the first guitar I built after completing my waiting list. I had been building with the Torres/Hauser
approach for about five years, and this guitar is the pinnacle of that period. The guitar has never been
owned, and never played by anyone except me, and as such is very much as new. Not a scratch, blemish,
or flaw anywhere. I had built another Cherry guitar some years ago, and was especially impressed with
the sound. This guitar has the sister set of back and sides, and the best of my Bull Run cedar from the old
days. I used a very tight grain Port Orford Cedar blank for the neck, and all interior bracing is POC. The
head plate and bridge are old Brazilian with characteristic spider-webbing figure, and the fingerboard is
old African ebony. I had been saving all of these materials for the right occasion, and here it is. There are
two elliptical sound ports in the sides near the heel, one Mother of Pearl dot at the 7th fret, and my
Torres Tribute Mother of Pearl rosette.
This guitar is a bit of a nod to Hauser with the binding/purfling treatment, the bracing, and some other
components of the body size/depth. I used this bracing on my last ten or so guitars and have really come
to love it. This guitar is the exact opposite of the heavy school of building, and every part of the guitar
seems to contribute to the sound, at least that’s my sense of it.
The guitar is light as a feather, and the sound is at once bright, warm, balanced, and quite loud. The
instrument is like a wild beast waiting to be tamed, with full inner voices and a broad range of timber
available with only slight movement of the right hand. A remarkable sounding guitar waiting to be
developed in the right hands.”

Media
Listening with high quality headphones or audio equipment is highly recommended including EQ manipulation, if possible. We record everything flat with just a touch of Reverb to relieve dryness. My goal is to record the guitar as realistically as is possible. I speak in the recordings, my thoughts about the guitar (and possibly other things?). My speaking also serves to give you my first impressions and to also give you a balance of the engineering (or lack thereof) versus the sound of the guitar. I simply do not have time to engineer much of anything. Thanks. Rich
