2019 Kris Barnett #115 Cedar Ebony

Just arrived, this guitar is another superb example of the beauty, warmth, roundness and clarity of Western Red Cedar used as a top soundboard by a superb luthier  Pretty, full bodied voice, very powerful as well, and easy to play.  Kris is an exceptional builder, quite innovative, as evidenced by his numerous magnetic devices for armrest and supports, as well as in the bracing of this guitar.  Internal inspection reveals a very clean builder, using a (I’m giving you my own description) traditional bracing pattern, which he then lattices with thinner woods in an asymmetric pattern, and adding two buttons towards the bridge area, increasing mass a touch.  Additionally, the neck is bolted on from within, making adjustments relatively simple, as well as completely removing the neck.  Quite cool, actually.

There is a slight string ding behind the treble E bridge side and another small, hard to see one on the lower bout underneath, where your arm would rest.  I attempted to photograph them clearly for your perusal.

The canted fretboard gives the illusion of higher action.  Canted in the style of Hauser, this creates brilliant relief, allowing us to drive the guitar.  I do not find the guitar difficult to play, so don’t be put off by the numbers on the action.  She is quite easy to play, barre, etc.

This is a really incredible guitar at a most affordable price.  She has a very clean, open, brilliant sound, which lends further credence to the idea that a well made Cedar can be quite clear in her overall voicing.  The guitar is a pleasure to play and listening, the experience is enough to bring a smile to anyone’s face.  She is quite beautiful, as well.

Look at the other TAB and you will be able to enlarge via the magnifying glass.  Simply click the image and she will double in size for your convenience.

Listening with high quality headphones or audio equipment is highly recommended including EQ manipulation, if possible. We record everything flat with just a touch of Reverb to relieve dryness. My goal is to record the guitar as realistically as is possible. I speak in the recordings, my thoughts about the guitar (and possibly other things?).  My speaking also serves to give you my first impressions and to also give you a balance of the engineering (or lack thereof) versus the sound of the guitar.  I simply do not have time to engineer much of anything.  Thanks. Rich

MP3 Audio190912-2019 Kris Barnett #115 Cedar Ebony – I could play this baby all day.  As I wrote above, clear, vibrant, expressive, lyrical, responsive, with power and ease of play.  Great guitar!
