Meeting Manuel Adalid was a special treat for me, knowing of his longstanding pedigree in the industry, as well as his work ethic. Playing some of his concert classical guitars was an equal pleasure. I decided then and there that I would have Manuel’s best work in my own gallery. From the Lacote to the Torres to the Hauser to his own Anniversario, I was so immensely taken with his guitar’s ability to voice the music authentically, with subtlety, and with grace.
The Romantica or Lacote Model Classical Guitar (really, she is a Romantic Guitar) is truly gorgeous, actually built by Juan Hernandez. She is an amazing little guitar in the 19th Century style and it really does come off as authentic. From the look, feel, woods, play and sound, I found it a lot of fun to play, though a touch small for me personally. If you’re a smaller body type, with a good fit for 630mm scale guitars, playing a lot of Carcassi, Sor, Aguado, et al, along with some modern repertoire, I can’t see you going wrong here. Honestly, I don’t see why early Renaissance and Baroque music wouldn’t work on her as well. I mean, this is a really nice guitar with serious punch and good volume.
This is a 628mm (630mm scale length guitar, which is compensated), thus you will definitely feel a difference in the size of the body as well as the scale length, which is perfect for someone that has around an 7″-8.50″ span between pinky and thumb.
It is very comfortable, surprisingly so, at least for me. I must be getting older. I used to play 664 and 660 scale classical guitars. Now I’m finding that 640 and 630mm don’t bother me at all if they have decent space in the neck and strings.
The measurements are above for your convenience, so that you can compare to a regular sized classical guitar.
What a gorgeous light and seriously Romantic sound to her, all the while able to handle any of the repertoire you might wish to play. I will probably record some Aguado or Sor with her. I ended up going with an old anonymous Renaissance piece called “The Cobbler”, which has a light and airy feel to it, highlighting some of the qualities of this authentic sounding instrument.
The build is superb, authentic, with the bindings and rosette you expect from a typical Romantic Guitar or Lacote type instrument, light with excellent play, sound and projection. It is one of the reasons I wanted these guitars here by Manuel. I played one at the NAMM Show back in early 2013, wholly impressed by this guitar and all the others I laid hands on. I had to have them here, given the build and the price point of in and around $5K
The Spruce, a German Species was handled by Manuel in a very old manner, giving the guitar an aged look. Very appropriate for these historically based classical guitars. The Flamed Maple is spectacular.
I’m going to love recording these guitars, especially the Torres and the Lacote models I received.
The price includes a Custom Esteve Black HSC fitting the guitar perfectly. Shipping is not included…see below.

Listening with high quality headphones or audio equipment is highly recommended including EQ manipulation, if possible. We record everything flat with just a touch of Reverb to relieve dryness. My goal is to record the guitar as realistically as possible. I speak in the recordings, my thoughts about the guitar (and possibly other things?). My speaking also serves to give you my first impressions and to also give you a balance of the engineering (or lack thereof) versus the sound of the guitar. I simply do not have time to engineer much of anything. Thanks. Rich
MP3 Audio – 201126-2020 Manuel Adalid Romantica Lacote Spruce Maple 628mm – it’s kind of incredible for someone to build such an authentic sounding and playing guitar in the 19th Century style. Piercing, definitely to the treble side of the spectrum, from a balance point of view, as it should be in the favor of Sor, Aguado, Carcassi, et al as a style. 19th Century French and English music come off quite nicely on a guitar such as this.
