2020 Steve Porter #42 Cedar EIRW Lattice

Comments:

First thing I noticed is that she is heavy, but not unreasonably so.  This due to the double laminated sides of Indian Rosewood and Mahogany.  Most Lattice Braced guitars are equally heavy.  Steve uses Balsa and Carbon Fibre bracing in his lattice.

Easy play coupled with clear voicing, she has excellent projection.  She is very pointed, balanced and focused.  Voices clearly ringing out across all registers.  A real pleasure to play, featuring an elevated fingerboard, ported on both sides of the heel ala Ruck.  I sat with her for an hour yesterday, thoroughly enjoying my time with the guitar.  Powerful and expressive, I loved the fact that she was forceful when I needed it, yet able to tone down her ferociousness and give me a sweet musicality.

Numerous refinements by Steve have led to a superior musical experience.  Lovely guitar.

The story on the Cedar top wood is fantastic, by the way.  This wood came from a barn door at a winery in Anderson valley. The caretaker at the grounds ran his truck through the old door and a friend and fellow wood worker, who replaced it, asked Steve if he wanted to re-saw some of the old parts, so it has had lots of sun and is aged with exposure.  The wood is beautiful as can be clearly seen in the photographs.

Steve’s workmanship is superb.  This is an excellent concert classical guitar in every regard.  I find myself picking up this guitar to play and practice with for the last few days, helping to open her up.  I’m really enjoying this guitar.

This guitar is slightly used, sent by another dealer, unable to adjust the setup and or finish issues.  I have re-polished the top and back, making adjustments to the action, all while stringing her with Savage Classical Guitar Strings HT 90lbs or high tension, as the top simply requires the tension to truly activate her voice and power.  There is small evidence of rubbing on the top, by the lower bout, treble side.  I am addressing it further so that she looks pristine when I am done.  Steve then finished the guitar, setting her up so that it is low and accessible, turning out to be a load of fun to play.  Full disclosure, as always.  Priced accordingly.

Steve wrote to me on this guitar: “The tops on my guitars are 1.6mm. thick and are lattice braced with Balsa and carbon fiber. if you face the top to the lite and look inside through one of  the ports you can see that the lattice is un-interrupted by tone bars, the cross brace clears the top and is to receive the carbon fiber rods and resist change from string tension. There is also the laminated inner lining which is back beveled for limited contact. Sides are laminated Rosewood and mahogany at 4mm. Back is 4mm. FYI, the cantilevered neck is dry fitted and can be taken off handily with a 4mm. allen wrench, takes me about 5 minutes tops.
People ask me if the guitar is a double top and I explain no and I have then gotten, Oh like a Smallman. No I tell them It’s like a Gil Carnal.”

All specs and measurements are as per Steve himself.  She is quite comfortable to play, setup low and accessible.

Media

Listening with high quality headphones or audio equipment is highly recommended including EQ manipulation, if possible. We record everything flat with just a touch of Reverb to relieve dryness. My goal is to record the guitar as realistically as possible. I speak in the recordings, my thoughts about the guitar (and possibly other things?).  My speaking also serves to give you my first impressions and to also give you a balance of the engineering (or lack thereof) versus the sound of the guitar.  I simply do not have time to engineer much of anything.  Thanks. Rich

MP3 Audio – 240119-2020 Steve Porter 42 Cedar EIRW Lattice – powerful, driven, intimate to deafening as well as clear sounding.  Concert performance level without a doubt, though setup a touch lower for ease of play.  Nice guitar.
