Just arrived, this guitar is another superb example of the beauty, clarity and coloration of a Bear Claw Sitka Spruce used as a top soundboard!  Pretty, actually ridiculously gorgeous, full bodied voice, nuanced and expressive, powerful as well, and easy to play.  Excellent work by the master luthier from Colorado.  Wilson’s work is intriguing and accessible price-wise to me.  Looking forward to seeing her, I was pleasantly surprised at how easily she plays, her warmth, clarity and projection.  The guitar is strung with Savarez Corum high tension strings.

Please Note – The guitar is a 640mm scale length appropriate for those with an 8″-9″ spread (measure your thumb tip to pinky tip comfortably stretched) or if you are having trouble with a 650mm scale in general, i.e. stretches, stamina, pain, etc.  She is a pleasure to play, even for one such as me with a 10″ spread in the hand.

There is a photo of the top that I darkened and one that I lightened to highlight the BearClaw Spruce markings.  It is such a ethereal and translucent experience to look at this guitar.

Further clarification from Wilson on this guitar: “This guitar is based on one made by Domingo Esteso in 1926, you can find a photo of the original guitar in Sheldon Urlik’s book, A Collection of Fine Spanish Guitars, page 62. The original guitar has a five strut fan bracing which I used this guitar and I used a Manuel Ramirez style rosette instead of the original MOP fleur-de-lis inlaid in black mastic. The plantilla, headstock crest design and dimensions are based on the original, I chose to use slight larger body dimensions and string length to make a concert guitar that is attractive to a guitarist with smaller hands. ”

He’s a character too.  Look at his photo, you can see it in his eyes!  LOL  Good guy.

About Wilson Burnham – “I hand craft classical guitars in a small studio within Taos, New Mexico, moving recently from Allen’s Park, Colorado.

I use only hand tools and high quality woods to make my guitars. This allows me to make a guitar that has a true singing voice, one that is loud and has a large range of tonal colors and nuances.

As a classical guitar player myself, I know the joy of playing a truly wonderful guitar – one that sings, is responsive to your playing style, is easy to play with a voice that reaches the last row of seats in a recital or concert hall, and most of all, a guitar that you fall in love with so much you never want to stop playing it.

That is the kind of guitar that I make.” – Wilson Burnham

Wilson wrote to me recently, saying Colorado “got too crowded for us” – all the best to a talented luthier in New Mexico!

Media

Listening with high quality headphones or audio equipment is highly recommended including EQ manipulation, if possible. We record everything flat with just a touch of Reverb to relieve dryness. My goal is to record the guitar as realistically as is possible. I speak in the recordings, my thoughts about the guitar (and possibly other things?).  My speaking also serves to give you my first impressions and to also give you a balance of the engineering (or lack thereof) versus the sound of the guitar.  I simply do not have time to engineer much of anything.  Thanks. Rich

MP3 Audio – Coming Soon! – Guitar is stupid beautiful, with a beautifully balanced, expressive voice, giving you most anything you could want out of a top tier instrument.  Wilson has reached another level.
