Darren Hippner #966 Starburst Cedar CSA

Comments:

Gorgeous guitar originally modeled by Darren Hippner or “Doc” as I’ve always called him.  This design uses his Helion original bracing system using all Balsa woods.  How incredibly ingenious this guy is that he has modeled everyone historically, now coming up with his own, (I have to admit, his design makes a lot of sense).  The guitar, much like the other I had here recently (gone in a week, btw), with power and volume that is striking.  I find myself looking down at her, while playing, with a little bit of whoosh coming out of me as she impresses beyond her price point.  Way beyond.  Darren pulls no punches with his own design and builds.  She is very bold looking, equaling her sound and voice.  The Western Red Cedar is exquisite, while the CSA (Brazilian Rosewood) is monstrously beautiful.  Little known fact is that Doc is also a high profile wood dealer, specializing in aged, beautifully marked Sound Board woods and body woods.   He only uses the best of the best, especially with his own builds.  This guitar is an example of such.

The play on her is gorgeous. Powerful, loud, musical and expressive with easy peasy play.

She is brand new, wonderful and gotdam pretty as all get out.  Lovely guitar!

Some issues to note, I found a small seam in the Cedar top by the Bass side (see photo) and there’s a finish issue in the Brazilian on the lower bout, rings in the woods and such.  Everything is stable and guaranteed by Darren, it is priced accordingly as this is a $6,000 instrument in perfect condition.

Please note the inability to acquire CITES paperwork.  This guitar cannot be sold Internationally unless you wish to personally come to the gallery.

Media

Listening with high quality headphones or audio equipment is highly recommended including EQ manipulation, if possible. We record everything flat with just a touch of Reverb to relieve dryness. My goal is to record the guitar as realistically as is possible. I speak in the recordings, my thoughts about the guitar (and possibly other things?).  My speaking also serves to give you my first impressions and to also give you a balance of the engineering (or lack thereof) versus the sound of the guitar.  I simply do not have time to engineer much of anything.  Thanks. Rich

MP3 Audio – 200725-2020 Darren Hippner 966 Starburst Cedar CSA – superb guitar!  The fretboard is radiused a bit easing play, and the guitar is powerful.  Funnily enough, it plays and sounds wonderful quiet and intimate if you wish it.  The horsepower is there as needed.  Nice!  I play Prelude #15, another Sketch I’m working on, Sam’s Lullaby and a little bit of “Here Comes the Sun”.  I found myself lost in the guitar and then laughing at her sublime greatness.

My Solo Book of sheet music is available here if you’re interested.
