2006 Thomas Malapanis #31 Cedar Cocobolo ex Angel Romero
Tom builds a superb classical guitar with a traditional voice, power and resonance. The guitar is very active, bold, forceful and clear in all registers. I sat with her for a touch today, taken aback by the power and clarity of the cedar guitar Tom built. Super clean voices, powerful in the mids and lows, easily accessible due to a near perfect setup.
The guitar is obviously owned and played in concert by the great Angel Romero. It was also recorded by Tavi Jinariu professionally. Angel writes, “Since I was first introduced to them [Malapanis guitars], I have enjoyed the tone quality, sweetness, projection and overall balance of his guitars. They are as beautiful and powerful as my finest Hauser’s, Fleta’s or Miguel Rodriguez guitars. They respond extremely well to all I ask of them in my performances. I have played them in concert and have had great success with them.”
It becomes immediately apparent why Angel played this guitar and admires Tom’s work. The guitar is a musical cannon, very bold, very direct, no mistaking what comes out of this guitar. I love guitars that let you know it’s a force of nature. It is a great mistake to believe that traditionally built guitars lack power. Italian and Spanish masters would laugh at the notion. I would imagine that Tom has a chuckle as well.
The guitar has obviously been played, has some smallish honest playing wear on the back and top. She is set up very well, very fast, ringing very true in all registers, deep basses, blooming to high singing trebles.
Listening with high quality headphones or audio equipment is highly recommended including EQ manipulation, if possible. We record everything flat with just a touch of Reverb to relieve dryness. My goal is to record the guitar as realistically as is possible. I speak in the recordings, my thoughts about the guitar (and possibly other things?). My speaking also serves to give you my first impressions and to also give you a balance of the engineering (or lack thereof) versus the sound of the guitar. I simply do not have time to engineer much of anything. Thanks. Rich
MP3 Audio – 2006 Thomas Malapanis #31 Cedar Coco-Brouwer-Preludios4th – recorded by Keiran Franzone, for a video that was shot on August 13, 2018
Another MP3 – I recorded the guitar myself to give you more of my feel for the guitar. It is superb!
My Solo Book of sheet music is available here if you’re interested.
Angel Romero plays and endorses Tom Malapanis guitars. This is back a few years ago. I have one of Angel’s guitars here from Tom as well, which happens to be this guitar listed. Angel is such a sweet man, laid back and so very good at what he does.
We have a video in production with Keiran Franzone of Fredonia University. Updates shortly. Here he’s playing Brouwer- Preludios epi Grammaticos #4 with Thomas’ guitar. This is an uncut MP3 with zero edits.
Premium Single Arch Top or Double Arch HSC is included in your purchase price.
