|This Lute Sonata is performed by Robert Barto on his “8th Weiss Volume” from Naxos labeled as Sonata 34 in D Minor
|The same CD by Robert contains Sonata 36 in D Minor, which is designated Sonata #8 from the Dresden. Clearly, there is an error in the numbering somewhere. Regardless, it’s a beautiful Sonata, which Barto performs admirably.
|Dr. Douglas Alton Smith and Timothy Crawford, editor of the Sämtliche Werke
|Smith-Crawford numbering is S-C 34
Prelude from Weiss’ Dresden MS Sonata V in D Minor – This entire Sonata is arranged in Drop D Tuning. Some very pretty music contained within this famous Sonata. This is a one page sample of the piece. Again, this entire Sonata absolutely sings. The prelude is just the beginning of how musically this sonata lies in the hands. Not tough to play, it required some thought as to how to get the instrument to sound nice and keep the flow going. Once you get it, it is awesome!
